I'm thinking of replacing my Genesis Coupe with something altogether more waftworthy, but also powerful.

Can't decide between an AMG C55, and a Jag XJR (2004 ish). They both have their merits.

Which one would be less ruinous to the wallet? Any major issues to look out for?

That's like asking of two hookers which one is less likely to give you herpes.

Imagine you're a kid, playing 'WWII fighter pilots' - do you want to be in the Spitfire or Messerschmitt?

Nothing wafts like a Jaguar. Big bills though. I went with the E38 BM as it seemed a little less stressful on running costs

I thought about a Beemer, but it's just not a Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag!

And the C55 has that lovely V8 rumble going on.

Are they both THAT unreliable?

No. I like the C55 but it's just another car.

The Jaguar is a slice of fried gold. Buy one

Many people run V8 Jag XJs without issue.

The C55 and XJ are like chalk and cheese. Buy the C-class if you want dull and boring with a bit of oomph. The Jag although dated style wise is a much more fun car to drive because its so light. It is however, lacking in the exec toys and stuff like the nav now looks horribly dated.

In what way is an XJR light? It weighs more than my 740i!

740i (e38) 1965kg
740i (e65) 1895kg
XJR (x358) 1665kg

You sure wink

LOL!

Yes, I much prefer the Jag. OK so you've convinced me on that issue then.

So what are the big bill items and issues on the XJR?

Tensioners on the engine were a failure point. I think they changed the design a bit over the years but not too sure. Gearboxes are sealed for life, but do need oil/filter changes or can fail.

Some x358's suffer corrosion of the aluminium panels causing flaky paint. I think many where recalled and painted under warranty, but worth checking. Apart from that I think they're fairly good all told, just check all the usual things you would for any car (electrics, suspension and clonks etc).

As an alternative, how about an Audi S8 with a 5.2l V10 for less than £20k?

I thought about an Audi a while ago, posted on here, and someone replied saying he had one sitting on his drive that was ruinous to own, and therefore not going anywhere...

OK, so let's say I want a barge (and I would love to have the Jag), which is the less ruinous of the XJR, 7-series, and S8?

And is there a specific list on t'net anywhere of stuff that the Jag should have had fixed before buying one?
