Hi
A long term restoration project has just been MOT's and thankfully passed.
The engine is a rebuilt unit, I purchased it second hand but had be reliably informed (with paperwork) that it had been rebuilt circa 1000 miles ago.

I have to get the car setup properly as I know it could run better.

The MOT emissions paper states:

CO % vol as 0.019 (max allowed 3500)
HC ppm vol as 18 (max allowed 1200)

Are the above values excellent, average etc?? And what do they mean?

Cheers

Thanks but what does it tell me; that the engine is using fuel well??

It all depends on the car but if it has'nt got a cat fitted its very lean. To the point where you might even burn out a valve. I would have it looked at.

If it has a cat which going from those figures it has it pretty much tells you the cat is working really!

The HC's are unburnt fuel and oil, there is trace which you would expect, nothing at all to worry about, the co is burnt fuel badness and again it is only trace.

If the car was poorly the hc's would be much higher but the only real way to tell the engines health would be to monitor the fueling from upstream of the cat.

All said it looks more than healthy.

The hc reading means unburnt fuel which the reading you have is very good.

The other reading is how the car is running, ideally it wants to be about 2.00 %, as said above its running to lean, if it's not a cat equipt car.

Results look like fine.

Oh, and 'no-cat' car wouldn't get anywhere near that low C0% and HC content nor at the same time. Not by a long chalk.

CO% = carbon monoxide parts per million.
HC = hydrocarbons parts per million.

on a non cat'd car the the lower the CO the leaner the mix of fuel and air.

HC is normaly unburnt fuel or oil being burnt in the combustion chamber so a nice low figure.

The workshop books will tell you what the makers intended the figures to be at idle.
this is a good place to start but the figure you really need to be bothered about is lamba.
if you have perfect lamba accross the rev range under load for this you would beed to have a wide band lamba sensor port fitted then have the car set up on the rolling road.

I assume it has a cat then.
The product description from the exhaust is:

CAT12+. 2.5"(63.5mm) FULL SYSTEM FROM TURBO BACK. 3.5"/4" RI or 4" RI TAIL PIPES

The cat12 bit is catalytic converter?

It is a 1990.

I have only driven it 5 miles back from the garage to be honest. It boosts early and drove ok. When teh turbo boosts you can hear it spin/whistle.

Not too sure what pinking sounds like to be honest.

I will be getting it set up some where with the correct diagnostics soon.

Cheers

id be very suprised if a 1990 for had a cat fitted but i could be wrong.
i didnt want to worrie you but id hate to see it damaged after you have clearly had so much time and effort put into it.

youll prob find it pulls much stronger and smother once set up by someone in the know.

ps lets see some pics of your work on the resto.

just had a quick look very good work. im not the biggest ford fan but you clearly love it and have done and amazing job! from what you can see in the pics i dont think it has a cat.

get it checked out it might be fine as its electronic fuel injection it might increase fueling with boost but better safe than sorry.

well done again.

Hi
there is no lambda figure quoted anywhere.
On the exhaust emissions white paper it is only the CO and HC readings.

The car is booked in Saturday morning at Power Engineering for a rolling road set-up. I am hoping they can set it up perfectly.

Cheers

OK, without that it's hard to know/understand where your at...

Anyway, if it's heading for a RR setup, then they will soon tell if it's good/bad and sort I am sure...

I'm guessing the car has a stainless steel exhaust? They can have a 'catalysing' effect, certainly lowering CO levels, but not as good as a proper catalyst under all conditions obviously!

When an engine is running so lean, the unburnt HC levels are normally up near (or past) the 1000ppm (0.1%) mark - so clearly there's something going on wink hence my thought about the stainless steel exhaust.

Had a (very very) quick glance at your other thread, by the way - very thorough work, looks damn good smile .
