Not a rant merely an observation. I fancy a change of car (I know I have been fickle about it) and want to go from a prestige diesel estate (C320 CDI) to a far more impratical car (M3, S4, big V8 etc) and thought it would be easy as everybody appears to be wrapped around the crank regarding economy.

I have spoken with a few dealers who have offered £6500 in p/x against cars which I would have thought would be hard to shift (big, uneconomic, manual saloon cars) which seems really low for what is a more desirable car in the current market.

Perhaps I am being blinkered - perhaps a visit to DMS is in order!

Thats dealers for you. They offered £7k for my 10 plate focus. Seen exact spec and milage for 10k..... Just kept the car instead and getting a second impractical car biggrin

How do you think the dealer would make a living if he gave you close to retail for your focus? It's not like there is a national shortage of them.

Think of the dealers overheads, how easy it is to source used focuses, and how much discount you'd want from that £10k asking if you were buying.

Sell it privately.

I have recently changed from an Octavia VRS to a TT.

I was offered 4,500 trade in by a couple of dealers, and about the same from we buy any car et al.

I put it up for 6,500 privately and it sold very quickly for full price to the first viewer. Had plenty of other interest and could probably have sold it 3 times over!

I'm selling another car at the moment (classic Ford Popular so far more specialist) and again, plenty of interest and sold for the asking price.

Dealers will never give generous px prices, but if you advertise well and price correctly selling privately is easy!

Yeh all good n that but hes got a 3k margin there and that was me bartering! Was a 12k audi i wanted and dealer wouldnt budge. I walked as i wasnt prepared to pay the difference smile. Yeh theres a lot of foci's? Hah. But i know what he means the dealer tries his best to rip you off because at the end of the day he has to make money

It's not ripping you off its business. Dealer needs to sell more than anyone needs to buy so if you can't do a deal it's either your expectations or negotiation skills that are in need of work.

£3k margin. Minus £500 for a warranty, £100 prep (am assuming it doesn't need much!) and perhaps £1k discount for the buyer. Margin down to £1400. Then discount operating costs, salaries, premises etc etc. Oh and tax on what's left. I'm not a trader, but I understand that businesses need to make money. I suspect if he let you walk then it didn't stack up for him.

Not to mention the fact that he possibly only had £500 in the Audi and knew he focus would be an equally hard sell ( or didn't fit his stock)
