Following on from the thread where I asked about the Renault Sport Clio, i am still looking at varous options and wondered about the Mito.

Back story is this.

I have a year old MX5 which was bought for fun and for a daily trip to work. the other car is a petrol Mazda CX7 which is silly to use on a short commute but great as a load lugger on a 260 mile weekend trip to our place in Scotland.

Love the MX5 but we acquired a dog. Now all of us can't really go out in that and it really isn't practical.

A small - supermini-sized car will probably replace it. I want something with decent performance, equipment and economy, hence my post about the RS. It will be a commuting car, but i also want somethign that I can have fun with.

Got some great advice about the clio, but would love to know more about the Alfa Mito. Performance, toys and economy are important.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,

Dan.

It's a fiat punto so performance will probably be a bit st unless you can get a cloverleaf engine in it. not sure on handling but at least the interior might be nicer.

Sorry forgot to mentions, it is the Cloverleaf I am interested in. 170 BHP I think.

It's a moderately quick small car. Nothing special, but there's nothing particularly wrong with it either.

It's rather ugly to my eyes, though.

I worked for Fiat for a short while, and took a Mito in part ex. To be honest, it did nothing for me. Based on the Grande Punto, and it didnt feel any more special, although the interior certainly felt it. I sat too high, the steering wasnt direct, it seems a cheap way into alfa ownership.

My money, would be on the RS

Ah well then get that! The clio has a dreadful interior and totally lets it down. Put me right off it.

Isn't the Punto Abarth rather cheaper and largely the same car?

I have driven the 120 hp 1.4 turbo MiTo and I was amazed how well it drove and how quick it felt/was, obviously not a patch on my Clio 172 but still good fun.

The interior is a really nice place to be, felt very solid the blaupunkt stereo is great.

It did suprise me that the fuel economy was worse than my Clio 172 though!

If the prices for the 170 hp version drop enough, they will defo be on my list to buy.

The mothers got the 1.4 Turbo, quite highly specced with the bigger teledial alloys and silver mirrors, etc.

It's a lovely little thing really, looks absolutely fantastic. The interior probably isn't the best quality but it looks stylish in a way only an Alfa can.

Seems to enjoy being thrashed in typical Alfa style as well, hence the DNA switch thing is always in the most potent setting.

Can you feel a difference between the DNA settings?

The steering felt a little stiffer/harder but that's all.

Certainly can, definitely seems a lot more eager in the Dynamic setting (I think that's what it's called).

Once accidentally put it in the setting designed for Snow and adverse conditions and it felt like you were driving in mud.

I had a base 1.4 Mito on hire last week on hols in Mallorca for the week, nice comfy little car to drive but absolutely nothing told me it was an Alfa, no zing to it whatsoever. The DNA button made the steering a little heavier and turned the throttle into an on/off switch biggrin. It drove OK and had nice seats but was nothing out of the ordinary.

The cloverleaf I drove was a great little car, you do notice the Punto bits but thats no bad thing really as they are not half bad cars! The performance and handling were great but not on par with the clio but as good as most other rivals. It certainly puts a smile on your face as it is a nippy, good to drive stylish little car.

Have you also thought of looking at the Punto Abarth, DS3 or the Ibiza Cupra?

My other half has a Mito 155 and it looks fantastic, goes damn well and is a pleasnat place to sit but and its a big but, the ride quality is chuffing awful. You feel every bump and it transmits the road back into the cabin in a very harsh way. It torque steers like on old 80's GTi but its worse as there is zero steering feel. Whoever signed the car off at Alfa should be kicked in the nuts.

Seat is on my list. I hadn't considered Citroen. Cheers I will have a wander onto their site. I didn't know there was a Punto Abarth....Is that the Grande Punto?

Yes, same engine as the Mito you're looking at I think. It certainly has a similar power output.

They are Part of Fiat group. They Dont do high end sporty Fiats any more and instead badge them as Abarth. They are trying to promote Abarth as a stand alone brand and may bring a roadster out based on the Alfa 4c.

My money would go on a DS3 over a Mito, but then it would go on a 197 over a DS3
