Was waiting at some light in Sale, Manchester having had a tooth removed, was feeling a bit sore and delicate, had the roof down and a lad in a Fiesta made an approving gesture and had a big grin, totally cheered me up, not after approval for my oddball choice in cars but was nice that he felt compelled to be positive rather than the general mean spirited urban vibe you usually get, it's only four grands worth of old 944 cab but people do seem to respond better, think they know it's not a lot of money as that does seem to offend a large portion of the public, which cars do you find get good reactions and which don't ?

My old classic mini. Had a guy in a (a the time) brand new M3 wind down the window in traffic and tell me what an awesome looking car it was and how much he'd always wanted one. I complimented him back and we both carried on with our journeys. Left me with a big smile all day.

I get the odd good comment about the MX5 and Golf as well. Weirdly some one mistook my MG the other day for a Bentley and claimed I must be getting paid too much. I LOLd.

Currently have a little '89 Polo Breadvan I use for getting to work, super low mileage. Wherever I go, someone always comes up and says 'cool little car!'. I've had plenty of fast cars but the Polo attracts more attention than any of them ever did. I get approached at least once a fortnight by people asking me if I would sell it to them (one of the best compliments you can get IMO). Been offered 5 and 6 times what I paid for it on a few occassions but I don't think I'd sell it if I was offered 5 grand for it. Not the best looking car in the world but I love it. It's the first car I've ever had than I can just put petrol in it and drive. Never needs fixed, just service it regularly and it goes and goes.

Out and about in the Monaro last month on a rare sunny day and while stopped at some lights, a new Golf diesel pulled up to the right of me and began revving his engine every now and again. As I looked round and grimaced, expecting to see a right pillock, there sat a family of four, with the bloke asking me to rev my engine. I duly obliged with the added extras of some pops and bangs, which made him and his little lads very happy. "Mate, that sounds mint! Never seen one on the roads before!"

Cheers me up sometimes and restores a little faith in humanity, when even a DERV driver is a secret petrolhead at heart. biggrin

Both of my Cosworths always get nice comments, and thumbs up etc, the Escort especially. The other side of the coin is always "is it a real one?" frown

I rarely get anything other than good reactions to my current car.

Even my M5 used to get good reactions.

When I drive the X5, reactions are less good, but rarely hostile.

My TVRs have always drawn positive comments

I think people know that to own one and put up with it's "characteristics" you must be an enthusiast rather than a poseur.

A few notable ones for me, and only had it 5 weeks.

1) Parked car outside my house and a few of the local kids are walking down the road and I overheard one saying "wow, what's that?"

2) Along side a Westfield in traffic in Leeds, both me and other driver commented on how nice the others car was

3) Same again with the owner of a s1 exige in works car park

"Is that your Landy?"
"Its my Dads"
"Oh"

From a bloke at the till in a petrol station.

It's the most I have ever got from someone I don't know (Not about my car technically). I'm not sure if that's complimentary or not. hehe

Although the 'Land Rover wave' is a common occurrence. smile

I parked my car (strategically, where I would be seen walking to it when leaving) outside a pub where I was meeting this girl for a first date, or first meeting actually since it was an internet job.

She saw the car, I asked if she wanted to go for a drive so I drove her back to my place and boffed her! Guess you could say that was a good reaction wink

I seem to only get reactions to the MX5 from small children. I heard one a few weeks ago say he wants one and it was a cool car, then I had one a few days ago shout "grandad!"

I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing!

Never had wild crowds descending on my Civic Type R, it's not really rare enough to be a head turner for most, but the exhaust does tend to A)scare people when I fire it up and they don't know how loud it will be and B) make grown men giggle like kids at the VTEC scream and the crackles and bangs towards the redline!

Driving through Epernay one summers evening; stopped at lights. Noticed a well dressed gent out with his wife for a post dinner stroll. As they drew level with the car he smiled then gently nudged his wife, looked towards the car and said, "C'est un Caterham" and walked on.

On the same trip I was exiting a village to see a ribbon of road with linear curves open up before me. There were some grape pickers on a break sitting on either side of the road about 500m ahead. I couldn't resist it. I gave it the full beans through all the gears not knowing as I passed them what reaction I'd get. They all cheered and clapped as I screamed through. A wonderful moment.

Happy days....

Oddly, I seem to buy cars that attract the same question. Both the Cavalier and the Volvo (the non-devil fuel one) have prompted the question "Is it a real one?" which is a bit odd as a) it suggests the quiz master is a bit old school and knew of the cars when they were new or b) would suggest Joe Bloggs thinks there's alot of replica 'hot' Cavaliers and Volvos out there.
