Everyday on my way to work there is a single lane A road approx 2 miles long and you always get someone who's always in a rush and stay close to my bumper (i do the nsl),at the end of the road there are 2 sets of traffic lights with 2 lanes that filter back into 1.
When approaching the lights there is always 1 or 2 cars in the left hand lane and 5 or 6 in the right hand lane,so what lane do you think Mr "i'm in a hurry & my journey is more important than yours" goes in?the right hand lane everytime!.
As i toddle off from the left hand lane they are always way behind me when the lanes merge,WHY DO THEY DO THIS? my wife says the outside lane is the faster lane but i explain to her that there is no "fast or slow lane" but it seems that all the other people in the outside lane think like her!
WHY......

But what is the point of queuing behind 5 cars when the inside lane is empty lane ?

Some people do the speed limits, some people don't.
People who stick to the speed limits get intimidated/harrased/bothered by those who don't want to do the speed limit.
Let them go and have a hassle free journey.
There is your answer.

I'm just glad that the single lane a road is there every day and not just only on some days. Imagine how confusing that would be wink

Sounds like a strange arrangement, are there turns to the left and right at the traffic lights?

How long is the distance between each set of lights?

Is this section two lanes?

Plenty of lights have that arrangement - it is to allow more to get across on a green light

At least you get to do NSL. My commute starts with about three miles of single carriageway of well surfaced, straight NSL road with good visibility, only broken by a roundabout. At the time I travel it's usually just a bit too busy to be able to overtake safely and every day there is someone happily pootling along at 40 oblivious to the queue behind them.

Ring road leicster SC 40 limit - many do 30 - until they start going downhill when they get to 40 - then stay at 40 through and beyond the 30 sign !!

This refers to the stretch from the beaumont leys lane roundabout towards the red hill roundabout/flyover

The reason for my post is if one lane has lots of cars and the other lane does'nt then just use the lane with less cars, they just seem to be drawn towards the outside lane regardless of how many cars are there!

Forgot to mention that at both set of lights there is a left turn and a filter to turn right, the nearside lane ALWAYS makes for more unrestricted flow.

Are those traffic lights there all the time too, or only on some days??

I wouldn't let it bother you too much.

In many situations using the right lane can be quicker, but if it is as you describe and you know the left is quicker, just keep using it happy in the knowledge you have beaten the tailgater by a few more yards.

The traffic lights are always there as i've never seen them moved, they are normal size and i think they are set in concrete smile, when the car in the lefthand lane turns left it frees up the straight ahead route.
Also my wife says "why are the big lorries/buses/coaches using the outside lane" and it does seem a bit silly to me as they are slower than a car to pull away and will have to be aware of traffic in the (slower)nearside lane.

There is an open window on the left of the picture and in that pane is the sign that looks like a CHAIN LINK
Click that symbol and then right click on the highlighted bit and copy

paste onto here but put [url= at the start of the link
Then put ]MAP[/url] at the end of it leaving no gaps

The only reason I can think that they tend to use lane 2 is because it goes nowhere other than road ahead

Perhaps they think a left turner will hold them up !!
