Experience with the legend - Ferrari F40
Discussion
This has fast become my favourite car. Thanks for the write up.
I remember reading another Phers comments recently, saying how he disliked driving the F40 as the engine has so much turbo lag, an imperfect gear change would see you dropping off the power and a general dismay for how difficult it is to drive. These comments make me want to drive one so much more.
The F40 is what I would imagine to be the epitome of the drivers car. Very difficult to drive with heavy controls, raw power and lots of noise but rewarding. I remember seeing a video of a racing driving taking an F40 around a track, it had an interior view and it looked like hard work. Like he was fighting with the car, trying to tame it.
Awesome.

Gotta say that although the F40 is a top pick for me as well - when I did see one in the flesh driving by I thought the rear wheel arches and wheels didn't match up pleasingly from some angles - a bit ropey or kit carish. I've never seen the same in photos just that time I saw it in person. Fairly, certain it was not a replica as it was pulling into a dealer.
Light weight, spartan and Ferrari - what's not to like?

From what I read on hear, most PHers would hate all the above 'features'.For me, this is my favourite supercar along with the GT2
Thanks for the positive feedback.
It is definitely not an easy car to drive but it is more involving than it is complicated.
Watching the owner when he was pushing it hard showed me that it is a car in which you have to be willing to get stuck in. But it is clearly hugely rewarding.
The day before I got to have the passenger ride and drive, we had driven Route Napoleon and he was absolutely buzzing afterwards (unsurprisingly). To be honest, the owner was in no worse state than us and he felt that he wouldn't have wanted to be there in any other car.
With regard to its "features" or perhaps "character traits", like any car you have to learn how to get the best out of it. In many ways the boost situation is little different from other not-so-modern turbo cars in that it's a matter of understanding where the meat of the power lies in the rev range. Certainly you know about it when it comes on boost but that is part of what makes it such an exciting - and fast - car, particularly coupled with the looks, noise, steering and general no-nonsense road-racer feel.
