New remap needed after fitting KO3S?
Discussion
Hi guys,
I've just recently had my Audi A3 1.8T remapped by R-Tech (took it from 150 to 176 bhp).
They said that because of the engine code AGU and the age of the car, they couldn't get anymore more power out of it, not sure if this is true as most companies claim 40hp gain at least. Anyway, I'm thinking of fitting a KO3S turbo (obviously running KO3 at present) later in the year to gain some more power.
Can anybody tell me, would I need a new remap after fitting this turbo upgrade or could I just 'fit it and play'?
Obviously a fresh remap after fitting the bigger turbo would reap a better reward than not remapping, but I'm just upgrading to gain 'extra power', not to extract the max possible power out of the new turbo. Hope that all makes sense?
Just wondering if anybody knows, or perhaps has done this already?
Many thanks

176 from a 1.8T is quite poor. 250 is a resonable amount.
What a daft post...OP, 26bhp increase does seem low, but it depends on many factors such as the health of the engine - did you get a before and after power plot?
Not heard of that particular remapper, but Revo and AMD seem trusted amoung VW circles, and generally, a new map is recommended when you change mods.
You should be able to change your K03 to a K03s with no problems. You'll need another map before you'll be able to reap the benefits of the K03s though.
Do all supporting mods before remapping next time
A friend of mine had the same engine as you but with a k03s and no map. The only problem he got was the k03s would boost to 0.8bar before the actuator released pressure. This confused the car somewhat as on the standard k03 it would only boost to 0.6bar. This resulting in a jerking motion sometimes on full throttle, and more than likely no increase in performance whatsoever

Cheers guys for all your help
To be honest, all remappers and 'piston-headers' have said that 1.8T's with the KO3 turbo will not get over 200 bhp in pretty much all cases, so 250 is impossible?
The car came out at 152 bhp on the stock rolling road test. After remap it was 176. I am pleased because the max power now comes in at 4,800 rpm not 5,600 - makes a difference! Also, a 24 bhp increase is still a pretty noteable gain on any car. It does drive much smoother too because of the torque gain.
The car was fully standard prior to remap. The only reason I'm thinking of upgrading to a KO3S is because I was dissapointed with the remap result....unfortunatley!
And I think eventually I would get a new remap to reap the full rewards of a new turbo
does anybody know how much bhp the KO3S will give you? Also, does anybody know a good manufacturer? There seems to be loads of circa £200 KO3S new from China on eBay....but how good are they??
Again, mega appreciate all the advice chaps

Don't buy a cheap turbo from China. I have no experiance with them, but I'm 100% certain it will not be good quality. The 1.8T has 180hp standard with the K03s but I'm not sure if there are any other modifications. The 180hp cars remap to ~220hp, so expect 200+.wolfsburggolf said:

There are a lot of guys who have been in exactly the same situation and can help answer all your questions and point you in the right direction...
Btw, very impressive that you have a 150bhp model and you got 152bhp before the remap!

Haha, yes....I'm kind of guessing their rolling road probably reads slightly high? Either that or my frequent oil changes have paid for themselves? :/Cheers for that, I'll get signed up!

The AGU uses a different ECU to the later DBW cars.
M3.8.3 on the early non CANbus cars and ME7 on the later stuff or ME7.5 if you have an engine with secondary air injection,
The ME7 and .5 are port mappable so will be easier to tweak.
The AGU is a good lump to start with if you want high power outputs. Same rods as the BAM (225 hp) engines and the BIG port head.
If you really want a different turbo forget the KKK stuff, get a garret GT28RS. It's old school but it's a much better piece of kit.
Something in my head is telling me there's a difference in the mounts for the K03s, 4 bolt downpipe instead of 3 or vice versa.

Yes I've never thought about a KO4, but to be honest I don't want to start creating 'loads' of work and run up a bigger bill.
Ace idea though!
I guess with the K04 you're looking at new oil lines, exhaust manifold, downpipe and injectors. When I had my 20vT mk2 Golf, I originally ran an AGU with a K04 and managed to acquire all of the bits easily enough. As you say, I think the K03s is an easier prospect and if I was thinking about a K04, I'd probably be inclined to agree with the chap who suggested the Disco Potato or even an IHI or GT2871R. Ace idea though!

From my time on UK MkIV, the earlier cable throttle k03 would remap to about 190bhp max, drive by wire k03s would go to about 200bhp.

Not quite true, the first engine code to have the k03s was the AUM in the mk4 golf around 2001 on a Y. This had 180bhp.

I have this AUM,and a K03s turbo on my golf and it mapped to 212hp with bluefin. The 180bhp cars had a slightly different k03s and are engine code AUQ.

The health of the engine was noted as 165hp from the factory, although the car had
only 42 thou on it at the time.
OP what's the mileage on your car ,I think that has relivence.
