Engine Misfiring - Help!
Discussion
My car has a problem. It's a Porsche 924 2.0 and yesterday it started and ran quite rough (about 3/4-4/4 cylinders, but not too unhappy). Today it would barely start and backfired when I tried to raise the revs slightly (it seemed about to die at idle, about 2/4 cylinders running, and the engine itself was vibrating all over the place).
When I looked at the spark plugs today they have "carbon fouling" according to the pictures in Haynes. Suggested cause: Overfueling. I cleaned off the spark plugs and the car ran better. However it's no use having to clean all the plugs every time I want to start the car, obviously. I checked the spark from the coil on all four HT leads and it is nice and fat.
Here's some possibilities for what it could be:
+Cold starts and running it for only a couple minutes til the thermostat warmed up?
+Mixture control unit is causing too much fuel, not enough air?
+Cold start valve malfunctioned and kept pumping extra fuel into the inlet long after it was needed?
I'd play with the mixture control but Haynes advises against that stating that it's a delicate system that shouldn't be played around with.
Does anyone have any thoughts/similar experiences?
