Ford TDCi woes
Discussion
Just looking to pick a few brains if possible.
I have a Transit Connect, 55 plate, 1.8 TDCI 90bhp that has developed a problem.
Van started to smoke heavily on startup from cold but revs freely. When under load (ie you try to drive it) the thing clatters like hell and doesn't pull as it should.
Once warm it pulls ok bit there I still some clatter.
The van has just over 80k on it and has been serviced on the dot as and when required.
Booked into my local garage tomorrow and I've stopped driving it.
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Any known issues with this engine at this mileage?
Thanks in advance.
Matt

Having a quick poke around google and a subsequent chat with the guy who's going to be looking at it it does sound like it could be either injector or turbo problems.
Hopefully the bill won't be too horrific.
Cheers guys, will let you know how I get on.

I have the 2ltr TDCi in my mundane and that started smoking/down on power, im not sure if this will help on your engine but this is the stuff i checked
- All turbo hoses, i found that i had a split in my Intercooler to EGR pipe, check that as it is a easy pipe to get at iirc (plus its cheap from ford)
-EGR valve - depending on if your engine is euro3 or euro4 you may be in luck, the euro3 engine is a prely mechanical EGR valve so can be easily blocked off (i blocked it off) and that has freed up power and reduced smoke, if its euro4 you can still do the same but it will throw and ECU warning light on the dash.
-Intake manifold - These get gummed up due to the EGR valve, especially if yours has been stuck open so quick clean can free up power and cut down on smoke
-Injectors - before rushing off to buy new injectors - do you have diesel ontop of the cam cover around the injectors? - If you do then you can just tighten the nuts as the vibration does make them wiggle loose a tiny bit, i found that cut down smoke on my TDCi as well

It's goosed an injector. Around £400 for replacement + programming it into the system.
Yup. Just had to replace two injectors on my Alfa GT JTD. All four went away for testing and refurb after I was getting smoke, poor cold starting, low power and lots of vibration - two came back unservicable, two were OK. Fitted two new ones, coded to the car and I was away with all problems resolved.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
