My 17 year old son is looking to get car Insurance for a 1.2 diesel Vauxhall Corsa.

Would anyone be able to recommend or know of any Insurance companies in regards to the above.

We have tried comparison sites & a few others but near horrendous figures.

We were going to Insure him as a named driver having the car in my wifes name but apparantly is illegal & would be void Insurance according to Martin Lewis this morning on Daybreak TV program...

Thanks

Shaun

Having the wife as the main driver and your lad as a named driver when it's him doing the majority of the miles is known as "fronting" and yes, not really legal and people on here will flame you for it.

Unfortunately prices for new drivers really are as high as you've already seen. All you can do is fiddle with the quote on the comparison website. Limit the miles, say it's parked on a drive/road not in a garage. Put you and the wife down as NAMED drivers but make sure it's still his policy.

Oh and get quotes for different cars. Unless you've already got the car he's going to be using and there's no changing it.
For my first car I got quotes on loads of different cars and then bought a car accordingly.

Add elderly low risk drivers as additional drivers on the policy. This should cut a large chunk off the premium and isn't illegal. Both of my grandparents are fully insured on my cars wink

Give CSIS.co.uk it's civil servant insurance organisation you don't need to be a civil servant and you get monthly payment no extra charge!

This, two 50+ year old women as named drivers on my policy (I would never let them drive my car either!) reduced my insurance by £800

Cheers much appreciated lads,

Gonna try that I'm sure his Grandparents won't mind smile

My lad owns the car so limited,

The civil servant scheme have to be 21 or over unfortunatly, thanks though Baron.

Add your wife and his grandmothers on it. I kept my parents on my policy until they started putting up the price.

Does a 1.2 diesel corsa even exist?

Must be a new one. I thought the smallest diesel was a 1.3Cdti

Don't bother with a diesel. Insurers really don't like new drivers with diesels. I don't know why, but at a guess it would be because they tend to be a fair bit torquier than tiny petrol engines and are easily remapped for my power. For me at least, the insurance quotes on diesel hatches come back looking similar to those for the cooking petrol versions.

You're right about fronting, but the sensible thing to do, I'm afraid, is get him through his test then tell him to forget about driving for a while. In the space of a year, even without driving, the cost of insurance halves and insurers are happier for you to have bigger, more powerful cars.

Seconding Grandparents. I have both mine on my policy as named drivers, knocked off over £700.

As has been said put parents on the policy, still makes a small difference for me at 26. Failing that some of my family members have done without their own car for the first year and just driven their parents car as a named driver on a Direct Line policy, after the first year if they want their own car Direct Line will give a years named driver no claims discount all being well.

No direct experience, but there are insurers who offer discounts of ~25% if the vehicle is not driven by the policy holder between 11pm & 5am..

A tracker needs to be fitted and I understand that it can be pretty pricey if Junior decides to go for an 'out of hours' spin around the block, but it might be something worth looking at.

As far as premiums are concerned, getting the first couple of years out the way (hopefully incident free) should see the costs come tumbling down..
