Well like it says on the tin really...

SWMBO has stated a preference for a 4x4 as her next vehicle and is quite taken with the looks of Range Rover Sport but a couple of issues have to be thought about first. She's now sat in a number of 'proper' SUVs and a few soft-roaders and loves the driving position as well as the luxuary (esp RRS, ML) and has already discounted some like the Evoque as she doesn't like the 'letter-box' view out of the rear mirror. One requirement which may stymie things is there will be a requirement to get her 84y/o mother in who's non to steady on her feet. Does this mean that a RRS or ML is out of the equation being too high or does air-suspension allow you to drop the height for entry/exit?

I know the RRS has the reputation (likely undeserved by now) of being somewhat questionable on the reliabilty front what are people's experience of this or indeed others? Is a Toureg a worthwhile option since (if I recall correctly) it's the Cayenne without the questionable looks (and insane performance levels)?

The thing is she doesn't 'need' one - just wants one so all the usual issues with anti 4x4 bias is irrelevant. Obviously if a 4x4 can't fit the mother then that's another story entirely

If it was me it would be Land Cruiser or Toureg. No idea about having to get an old lady in, or put of the car, as I am not Wayne Rooney.

Disco 4 - really nicely built, solidly reliable, air suspension for dropping, nice seats, and a damn sight nicer to drive than the Mercedes.

Or an X5 - I don't really like them, but they go well.

X5 or Cayenne.

X5 if the handling and performance (with accompanying thirst) of the Cayenne are not required. Not that the X5 is much less thirsty.

After driving my sisters LR3 to, and from the Land Rover dealer in Rochester, NY, several times, they would be nowhere near the top of my list.

I have an ML with air suspension but the settings will only raise the car for off roading. It does not have a setting to lower the car.

When parked the car will lower itself anyway but it is still quite a step up into the car.

I think you are going to struggle to find any large 4x4 that an 84 yr old mother will be able to clamber in to.

Maybe go smaller, X3, Volvo XC70, Mazda CX5, Freelander etc.

X5 is an arse to get in and out of, even with the step.
My mum who is only just under 60 has a bit of trouble with her dodgy knee. I have to help her in and out.

Then again, RRS, disco, Cayenne, Q7 aren't much smaller, so maybe a Q5, X3 or freelander?

if you do not need full time 4x4 the new Mazda CX5 AWD could be an option. not looked into it but i was told 4wd only kicks in if front wheels lose traction

On that note, the FX37 does the same thing, (it has the AWD system used in skylines past and present, the ATTESSA one).

I was going to suggest the Mazda or an XC-60

Unless said 84 yr old granny mother is pretty mobile you'll need to look smaller, maybe even than Freelander etc. Possibly Yeti, Kuga, Qashqai.

I took a Disco 4 in PX against a Superb a couple of months back and even when it's low on air suspension it's still prett high up.

i've got an aged father and had FFRR vogues with and without "deployable sidesteps" and I can vouch that they are a must have as the less mobile can literall just walk up the steps into the car.
