Hi all

As in the title really. I've just got a new job and I'm ready to upgrade my Octavia. I will cover around 25-30k miles a year, but the way the car allowances/ mileage work, it doesn't particularly benefit me to go Diesel, so either fuel is fine (get more ppm for Petrol). I'd like a bit of PistonHeads worthyness, but as it's mostly motorway miles it's not that important to me. Comfort is key and reliability comes next.

The only other stipulation is it needs to be greater than 2 litre displacement. biggrin

E38 735i? Might not make 30mpg, quite, but utterly sumptuous and available in minty condition for half your budget, leaving half for any upgrades/preventative maintenance you might need...

You'd get in an 07 330 coupe for that money. There are worse environments to be in especially covering those distances. Personally would be tempted by auto if you're a motorway cruiser.

530 would probably be better still. Fairly renowned for being solid cars.

Some nice suggestions. I forgot to add, I had a baby 4 weeks ago, so really need access to the rear seats through a rear door! Oops.

I like the 330/ 530 idea. Did the 330 come in saloon/ estate version?

As for E38 735i, nice idea, and the other thread promted me to start this one! However, 30mpg from one? Real world?

Yes, there was a 330i touring and saloon. Neither has a huge amount of boot space though, or rear seat space for that matter. Should be easily big enough for a family of three, though.

Not a bad shout. Opinions on engine? I have a VAG TDi, had a few. However, the petrol engines I know nothing of. Any good?

We've got the 200bhp 2.0 TFSI in our Octavia, and it seems a decent enough lump. Gives mid to high 30s mpg on the motorway; high 20s around town.

A newish Octavia VRS would suit your requirements, if you liked the old one.

If you can stand the front-end styling you'd get a late model (say '07-'11) Saab 9-5 Aero well within that budget; they can do mega miles without any hassle and the seats are very comfy. Personally I prefer the pre-face lift despite them being that bit older. Otherwise I'd be looking at Volvos (a bit dull maybe) or a A8/7/S/LS barge.

Good shout. I'd not thought about those. Any experience of their real world economy? And are they as bullet-proof as all other Honda's ever built? hehe

Had a 2.4 Type-S ('52 plate) for 5 years, probably 50% motorways and 50% mix of A and B roads. Economy was around 33mpg and it never put a tyre wrong. Ride and handling (on 17" wheels/Eagle F1 tyres) was superb and it was very comfortable.

I still stand by my previous answer.

I bet if you shop around you could pick up a lower mileage, newer one for less money too. But I would think an extremely pleasant and comfortable place to sit for 25,000 miles a year.

Although I do prefer the lighter interior ones.

If you're on the motorway a lot then you need a Volvo.

Check out that interior eek

Might struggle to top 30mpg but if youre doing a lot of motorway it surely won't be too far off??

Or the V70

They have the most comfortable seats you can sit in, stereo is briliant as standard and they are rock solid motorway cruisers.

I'm interested to know how the ppm is more beneficail on a petrol than a diesel when you are doing 25k a year? At that sort of milege, I would have thoght you were certainly in diesel terrirtory.

In Answer to your original post, UI would go witha 330i estate smile
