Not counting an mx5 or saab, it seems a used focus is the obvious choice for a runabout for 6 months for roundabout £1k on a tight budget.

Doing 20 miles a day, every day, am I going barmy thinking an BMW e36 might be an alternative?

20 miles isn't exactly a lot so I don't see why it would be a problem.

I had a 318i e36 (K plate) 4-door as a courtesy car earlier in the week. It had 50k miles on the clock and felt tight as a drum. Drove really well and very comfortable. Apparently it cost the garage £700.

I've been doing approx. 350-400 miles per week in my 1999 E36 318is since October 2010 and it hasn't missd a beat. Returns 37mpg with mixed driving but mainly dual and A roads and has made it through 2 winters.
I do park it in the garage over winter so it warms up pretty quickly in the morning but I've only serviced it once in that time.
Its cost me 4 tyres, £60 bits for service and approx £250 for 2 MOTs (suspension).
It cost me £1200 when I bought it and has now done 135k miles.
