I spotted this earlier (apologies for crappy mobile pic):

I always thought that modern Mercedes were fairly well built - but this car had 2-inch wide swathes of rust round every wheelarch, door bottom and the bootlid bottom. Oh, and the huge rear silencer box was hanging off and held tenuously on with garden wire. And the front bumper sported a nice strip of silver duct tape at each end.
I was frankly amazed at the sheer sheddiness of it, and can only assume from the state of the bodywork that its spent most of its life near in the sea!

That sounds like an especially bad one, and might have been near the sea to end up like that, but it's from the dark ages of Mercedes where quality plummeted - not remotely unusual for these to rust, they're well known for it!

Mercedes, in the mid-2000s, ended up slashing their profits to a third of what they were in their attempts to bring quality back up to scratch.

The only Mercs that dont rust are ones kept out of harsh weather or too new to rust.

I don't think anyone said Mercs don't rust.

Wife's 2006 A class will be having 4 new doors and a new tail gate, as all found to be rusting on the lower inside edges. Common problem apparently, luckly covered by warranty.

Saw a 6 month old C class at a forecourt a few months back, all shiny except for the wheel nuts that were corroded to hell!

Meanwhile in another thread, people are complaining about Bluetooth not working being a major issue with the XF wobble

Yup, my 225k mile C240 is perfect mechanically, but is imploding around me. I actually keep a bottle of bilt hamber rust converter in the boot and a brush for as and when i see new bits of rust.

My 1998 E240 had <deep breath>

2 new front wings
New bonnet
New bootlid
Front bumper resprayed

All corroded way earlier than they ought to. Mercedes originally said no, but I kept on at them and went higher up the chain of command.

Mine wasn't especially bad, I've seen far worse.

Not true - the OHs 2002 C class coupe was very much mollycoddled and garaged. I'm very particular about my cars and really - it was looked after.

Got rid of it last month - wheelarches gone, front and back, edges of bonnet, scabs in the middle of panels, huge patch around drivers door handle, spiders breaking out all over the place. Dreadful. Car drove perfectly, as-new interior, but I couldn't bring myself to look at it anymore, so it had to go.

Yep, they didn't rust, then they did, heroically and now they don't again (I assume)

late nineties/early Noughties Mercs are a gaping chasm in the Petrolheads possible barge/fast shed possibilities due to the rust issues, you see an E55 and you think, hmmmm, then you see photos of crusty wing edges, boot lid and a random patch on the roof and think sod that !

Mercedes committed a heinous sin against us upstanding fourth or fifth owners of aging german tat, we were brought up on cheap W124's with only a tiny scab on the front wing to show for twenty hard years, Million mile Greek taxi's with beaded seat covers, ready to cover another million only needing a service and new beads. They then foist on us shiny, blingy Mercs that miss the restrained luxury with a utilitarian edge they used to have and then they rust before your eyes. I suggest people buy up all the best examples of seventies, eighties and nineties Mercs they can find, an E230 Coupe is a fine thing and still pretty cheap for what it is, sometimes progress isnt always a good thing and I will need to reserve judgement on the current crop until they drop into my price bracket in 2027.

90s Mercs are notorious for being rusty sheds.
