Hi all

My sales director at work has just aquired a 2nd hand 635d, current model. We have just nipped to the local hand car wash to give his car over for a spruce up and he mentioned to me he was worried they might decide to take a little trip out. Naturally, he took the usual steps of resetting the trip and hiding the other trip mileage on the dash.

However, this promted a chat, is there a "valet" option offered on this car? You know, where speed is restricted when a special key is used. If so, could it be added retrospectively? I imagine with modern ECU's it won't be difficult.

I assume its remapped as otherwise I can't see any reason for them to want to take it out...

Tell him to get over himself. It's a Diesel BMW, not a fire breathing hyper car.

Although not an uncommon feature with other manufacturers - Jaguar noticeably - I don't remember it being an option (had a 645).

A lot can be done with a modern ECU of course, but nothing I'm familiar with.

BMWs (or at least the old ones I've had) all had a "Valet" key.

It did everything except open the glovebox. Yay.

There is a valet key available for the BMW cars but unfortunately it doesn't limit the RPM etc it just prevents access to the glove box or boot.

This. It's only a diesel BMW after all.

If he's that worried, get a mobile valeter to clean it in the car park at work.

There is a valet mode and I think it does limit the speed?

You need the emergency key and the carrier for it. There is a lock in the rear cup holder, turn this with a normal key and it will lock the front arm rest, glovebox and boot. I believe it does limit the performance somehow too.

I'll get my manual out when I get home and have a look.

A valet is someone who parks your car^.

If you want the fker cleaning do it yourself- I can't understand why an 'enthusiast' would let some disinterested party touch their pride and joy.

^obviously I don't let people do this either.
