Online Tax Disk site ?
Discussion
has anyone managed to tax their car recently via the online service ? tried last week and it kept erroring, tax has now run out and having another go and it is down for "Essential Maintenance".
Also, once I have paid, am I ok to drive the car as it is taxed or do I need to wait for the postman to deliver my new disk, I am thinking all the ANPR tax things work by the reg plate and check against a database so it will come up as taxed, do the Police still do you for "failing to display".
Despite being able to tax cars online now, still think it is a crap system having to physically have a disk in your car, would be nice to be able to pay monthly via direct debit and not bother with a disk at all.

It is definitely offline at the moment, not sure what was wrong the other day, it isnt like I am not computer savvy, I manage the database infrastructure for a FTSE 100 company so should be reasonably proficient !
That would be more impressive if it wasn't with Natwest :-)Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

Its a pain in the backside, not trying to not pay, it just wont let me and the other option is the bloody post office where you have to queue and the counter staff seem to live to not give you a disk due to some minor documentation thing, like taking a cover not, not a certificate of insurance, I am trying to give you money, dont make it hard, it is all joined up now so they can check online to see if it is Insured and has an MOT.

Oh come on, the Post office really isn't that difficult and if you can't get a V5, Insurance Cert and MOT together then you probably shouldn't be in control of a car.Its a pain in the backside, not trying to not pay, it just wont let me and the other option is the bloody post office where you have to queue and the counter staff seem to live to not give you a disk due to some minor documentation thing, like taking a cover not, not a certificate of insurance, I am trying to give you money, dont make it hard, it is all joined up now so they can check online to see if it is Insured and has an MOT.

Its worked for me for the last 4 years, no idea how people can struggle with it
Well good for you. The problems arise particularly where your insurance and tax disc expire at the same time and the website refuses to accept that you have renewed your insurance.
Yesterday I finally gave up trekking to the post office to do the task manually my renewing the tax disc for 6 months which should break the cycle. It's absolutely ridiculous that DVLA has no proper system to deal with this. There are thousands of people who buy a new car and inevitably have tax and insurance coming up for renewal at the same time every year.

WRONG! If you are with any of the big insurers who operate "automatic renewal" this can be a major problem. for instance, the insurance certificate for the car I taxed yesterday on the LAST possible day (30th June) only arrived yesterday. On a Saturday the post offices close at lunchtime. A system which only allows you 2 hours to get out to a Post Office and renew your tax disc, when its supposed to be renewable any time in the previous month, is simply not working properly.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
