I wanna de-cat my car but keep the standard exhuast...

How much drama in terms of cost/general fannying about is there involved in getting this done at a bog standard exhaust place?

A lot, I would imagine.

You would need an exhaust place that fabricates their own pipes for a start.

Very little - for a non-removable section (cat cut out, straight tube welded in place) I paid £50...

What car, and why do you want to do it?

Looking forward to your next MOT without your cat?

Might be pre cat, although Kwik Fit (rang them out of interest) span some utter bullst about it being illegal for them to do it, even on a pre cat car.
I put the phone down in utter disbelief.
Monkeys.

ETA unless it actually is illegal, in which case "Bravo the mighty Kwik Fit sirs, they saved a good drubbing at the hands of the MOT poltroon. Have at it!"

Simple.

De-cat pipe cost me £20, then £20 for the garage to fit it (sooo much easier than doing it at home).

Keep the cat should you need it for the MOT.

A simple cat-replacement pipe will be cheap, and relatively cheap to fit (assume an hour's labour).

However, depending on the car (and the total number of cats) you may need a remap and you'll need to declare the mods to insurers, who will (probably) charge you more premium. A remap for something like a Subaru Impreza would be c.£500 + VAT.

Depending on the number of cats (and their efficiency) your car might not pass it's MOT, so you'd need to keep the original cat in case you need to put it back on to get through an MOT.

It'll make the car louder too.

be clever

I'm not a fan of cats but it's got harder to remove them - when it was just a lanbda upstream of the cats it was easy but when manufacturers started putting one in front and one behind both tied to the ECU it's much harder

If it's a petrol car that has a cat as standard, absence of that cat will lead to an MoT fail unless the whole area is hidden away and can't be seen ( wink ) . (Even though a stainless steel exhaust could be enough to get the car through the emissions test on its own...)

If it's a diesel, my reading of the rules is that no cat is necessary... Usual rider; I could be wrong smile .

This is my understanding also.

A diesel car should pass an MOT with a decat, it all depends if it passes the emissions test. Majority do that I read about on the owners forums.
Wouldn't have a clue about your main question though, sorry.

I can answer my own question now. £80 seems the most expensive so far.
