Right, I accept it, I’m a car snob and I love my cars even though I never seem to keep one for long.

I’m 58 with a daughter and twins boys living at home.

In the past, I’ve had a sensible car plus a toy – and the wife has had a family five seater too, but most of the family trips have been in my ‘sensible’ car and the mileage has been kept down on her car.

She really is not a petrolhead!

Anyway, we have now agreed to replace her current car with another family car but this time I’ll drop to one car which will be a fun car so maybe a two seater or two-plus two.

Now I like my cars to be different but I really don’t want to look like a sad old git driving a sports car, although I suspect that I will.

So with a budget of up to say £55k, although preferably less, what would you folk suggest that I consider?

I quite fancy a soft top, although it doesn’t have to be, so could go for a decent s/h 997, XK or SL, or maybe even the lesser priced but newer model SLK, or Z4. I suspect a 360 won’t be an everyday type car but feel free to tell me I’m wrong.

I’m doing about 12,000 miles per annum.

My daughter plays in a bluegrass band so it would to be able to carry a guitar in the boot of back too from time to time.

Or should I face the reality of impending doom and just buy a Defender? The Disco 4 is great but it’s simply parked up 90% of the time at home or work, so I’d rather either get something ‘fun’ or a cheaper commuter.

I should add really that I would much prefer to pay less than £55k. The car would have to be really special at that price, as I do have other uses for the rest of the funds - like a bloody big tax bill just received!

£55k and you've got a quandary....

Go out and drive some cars, see what takes your fancy. smile

However if you want something a little different and room for a guitar, how about looking at something like this:

http://www.atlanticsportscars.com/VehicleDetails.a...
Brand new 2012 car, 5.0 DOHV V8, 411bhp manual gearbox. It's well below budget and leaves plenty in the pot if you want to tweak the suspension, upgrade the power a bit.

Or if you want more go how about a 550hp Shelby?

Mustang Shelby GT500 SVT (2012)

If you buy anything remotely intersting you will look a bit tragic to the sort of people who judge people negatively based on having interesting cars.

Doesn't matter.

Buy something you'll love driving. You have way more money to spend than you need for this, so you can pretty much buy anything that appeals to you. Your £55k could get you in to several Ferraris or all the way to the other end of the scale in a Defender. It's too broad a range for anything other than us randomly suggesting cars that aren't dreadful or cursed with a cheap badge.

If it was my money going on one car it would be an Evora. But I'd go look as 300's Mustangs first because car shopping is fun.

All great ideas.

I rather spend less than £55k if possible, so will look at the Evora etc

Thanks

A bit outside the box maybe:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3718103.htm

All the sports car speed and sound without looking like you're going through a mid-life crisis. Instead people will just look at you and judge you as appreciating the finer things in life.

However I do agree that you shouldn't give a toss what others think. You should buy the car for yourself, not for anyone else. So I'd start looking at bright red Ferrari 355s and 360s if I were you.

There was a thread recently about a chap who had used one as a daily. Think he was selling it with over 100,000 miles, so they are capable of it.

So much choice! Go and play Gran Turismo for a while, that will give yo usome ideas!

I'm pretty sure you could have a Nissan GTR for this sort of money - that would probably be my choice.

Who cares what you look like?

I'd be looking to get a nice 997 in your position.

I have the same problem as you, although with not the same budget.
My everyday car is a Defender 110,its my short work journey,my fishing trips, walking the springer spaniel etc.
I am also of an age where I fancy a toy, soft top 2 seater jobbie, without looking the sad git.
I started to lust after a Honda s2000,SLK,etc however I still had a vision of me being a sad sod.
So at the moment I have plumped for a BMW with a soft / hard top relative 4 seater, luxury, big petrol engine, sort of practical, and I think I will get away with it.
I do keep my cars a while though, but your comment of you dont keep them long, would suggest resale values need to be a prime importance to you, unless losing cash is not a problem either.

Maserati Granturismo. Suits your age, is STUNNING, sounds ace, carries 4 + guitar in perfect comfort. Reliable too.
