Very quick story here.

Booked my car in for a MOT at a local garage, left it there first thing in the morning.

Get a phonecall late Friday to say I can pick the car up but it failed on a couple of silly things but owner was OK, said just get them sorted, bring the car next week and don't worry about the retest fee.

So, off I go and on Saturday morning get everything fixed and phone the garage back to ask if I can pop in and get retest, sorry sir but the MOT was done else where, our tester was off sick so we took it to garage B.

Now garage B is only 4 miles away but now I have to get the car to garage B to get approved.

I'm well aware of the threads on cars getting driven without permission and all that but taking it to another business without customer approval, bit suspect isn't it?

Cheers

Loads of garages do this. If it went 100 miles, then maybe suspect, but 4 miles?

I've heard of a few garages that take there cars elsewhere for MOT test, same with motorbikes.

Setting up as an MOT tester is an expensive business.

Can't be much money in doing it that way though.

Edit:
Obviously the garage then gets paid for any remedial work - I'd imagine they tag on a few quid to cover time taking it to the test station too.

Meh... would expect the original garage to do the "retest" if the tester is back though and not expect you to take it to garage B.

But in the end it's four miles, simply not worth getting upset about and not really 'dodgy' even if it's not great customer service not to let you know.

Its really common apparently. A mate of mine runs a garage oop norf somewhere and he takes his MOTs around the corner. They sometimes take it to a third garage if they are overbooked...

The alternative would've been that garage A phoned you up and said your MOT can't be done as the tester's off sick, either pick it up and take it elsewhere or leave it with us until he's back. Sounds like they did you a favour!

As I said at the start, only 4 miles but I like to know where my car is and who is driving it wink

Does it not blow the old, "if you remove it from the garage we need to charge you for a retest"

As effectivly it was removed from the garage when they drove it down the road from garage B.

Anyway, thanks for the replies guys, got my answer.

Cheers

No one ever really has to charge you for a re-test; they might have a policy to do so, just as Tesco has a policy of not giving you free tins of beans, but there is no legal requirement for this.

How do fix whatever needs fixing if you can't take the car out of the garage? (assuming you're DIY'ing it).

Charging for a retest isn't compulsory wink . More details on the back of any MoT failure certificate smile .
