Evenin' all,

Well after whizzing around in my 'bike rack' 1.2 Clio & loving it, I keep finding myself thinking about the faster Clios, I get the 172 & 182, but haven't got a clue about the minute differences when people talk about the 'cups' etc.

So talk to me PHers, can anyone explain the differences between the different models?

No, that isn't everything I need to know - that thread is the one that got me thinking about the faster Clios. What I'm really after is a basic run down on what it is that makes the cups etc different. That thread raves about this, that & the other, but doesn't explain the actual things that make the different models different from each other.

Ok, my apologies to Hoygo, having looked at the end of that thread there is now a link to rather nice PDF explaining it all. In my defence Hoygo had linked to page one & I had assumed that I'd read the whole thread as I hadn't seen it resurface recently.

Doffs cap....

The non cups have climate control cruise control electric windows and mirrors bit more weight and few other toys

The cups are much lighter and thus a higher bhp per tonne - BUT were talking fractions of a second here and I can assure you it is very nice to have those extras

Also at legal speeds on the road you'd never really see the difference and until all the roads are repaired dare I say it you want a jaaaagg with high profile tyres !!

Right here you go

Started off with the Phase 1 172 in 2000. Only one version, different colours, no cup suspension

Then came the Phase 2 172 in 2001. New face and interior, but had regular sport suspension as opposed to 'cup' suspension

The Clio 172 Cup was a Phase 2, but no one says this. This was lighter, basic, no abs, thinner glass, no a/c. a/c became an option mid-life, as did a different colour - silver - all other cups are mondial blue

Clio 182 came in 2004. Looks similar to a 172 Phase 2, but has a twin exhaust, no spare wheel consequently. You could add cup suspension but it had all the 'luxuries', leather xenons plus loads more.

Cup packs added anthracite wheels, spoiler and splitter, but to be honest it's really hard to tell as they're easily changed aftermarket

182 Cup had no luxuries, basic interior and only came in Racing Blue or Inferno Orange. Not as hardcore as 172 cup, and not as light. The worst version in my eyes, still a great little car though

Finally the Daddy. 182 Trophy. Limited numbers (500), sachs suspension, only available in Capsicum Red. Had Recaros as standard, cup rear bench. Absolutely amazing car, never mind amazing clio

I've had a Trophy, 172 phase 1, and a driven all the other versions bar the 182 cup. Favourite for me are the Trophy and Phase 1 (slight bias maybe). Phase 1 is so raw, throttle cable, basic, it's my current track car in the making and I drive it every day while my house sells and I'm allowed a V6 then. Trophy is simply brilliant if you want to go blasting around the Yorkshire Dales.

Still confused? Lots of info here

Yeah, just a basic outline, there's still a few other differences, but the main ones you need to know are there, then if you decide to get one research a bit more (or ask me wink) and see if it's the right version.

Whichever you go for though you can't go wrong really if it's fun you're after

For me phase 1 172 renaultsport is the daddy. Cute looks raw performance and let's face it a much better car than the Clio Williams 1/2/3.

It's also the cheapest by some margin and frankly I cannot see you losing much. Keep it std keep it well maintained car will last a long time. Happy days.

Yep, I bought my Phase 1 for £1500 with 77k 2 owners and a folder full of bills. If I wanted I bet I could shine it up and get a bit more for it, but it's so god damn fun it'll be a keeper. It's more fun than the 200 I've just sold if I'm honest, if slightly less capable.

Genuinely think the Trophy might edge it, has the balance of fun with the amazing capability at going round corners.

Put some new shocks springs bushes drop links etc on OEM and see if you still think the same id wager your feeling it's not as tight but it's age and use.

Yeah maybe. I've got 172 cup shocks and Eibach pros half fitted (rear's done), just need some new bump stops before the fronts go on. Should make a noticeable difference
