To have an interesting car, with a decent level of performance, return over 30mpg with the ability to ferry 2 adults and a child around and get it for £3k?

Interesting in that i can look at it and think that it's a good car to get into now and then.

I had one of these for a while - quick, great handling, fun and the kids also liked it. You'll picked it up for less than 3

6.9 to 60? Under 3k too so you can spend some more on Fuel driving

Um yep.

Most PH'ers are probably bored with my 'fanboy flag waving', but you've just described a Skoda Octavia VRS, right there biggrin

A clean and tidy BMW e36 328i should meet your criteria - and you can choose Coupe, Saloon, Cab or Estate

You know, i've been looking for a while and there are two constants. Hot SAAB's and Skoda VRS'.

I reckon i'll need to pay more attention to these this weekend.

Forget modern Saab's - they're ropey old Vauxhalls under the skin. Google for more info about problems...

Get on the barge thread and have a look. They are not cheap to run, but not bad either, just watch the cooling sytem. Every E39 needs it replacing at some point. It's worth doing even if it's not showing signs of bork. They will do 35+ MPG on a run easily.

Lots of BMW 3's between £2500 and £3000:

Not sure what MG mpg is like:

Nor Clio, but this'll likely be the most fun you can buy for the money:
