Getting a numberplate from old car/bike

Folks,

THIS IS NOT A TOPIC ABOUT WHETHER PERSONALISED PLATES ARE WORTH IT OR NOT!

Right. My initials are SJD, and I would like a decent plate with them on. From my searches so far, the availability seems to be fairly limited. Best I can find in prefix is M15 SJD which is somewhat overpriced. There are 18 and 16 SJD which sold at DVLA auction recently, but they are silly money.

Ideally I'd like a 3x3.

DVLA sews up most loopholes pretty effectively. I know a vehicle has to be MOT'd to transfer the plate, but how likely is it that, say, a classic motorbike with an appropriate number would be non-transferable?

And why is SJD seemingly so sparse?

Don't know about getting hold of one but rarity is probably due to the area of registration, apparently;

someone on the internet said:

SJ - Ayr (Bute to 1974, Ayr to 1981, issued by Glasgow for Ayr from 1981)

So not a massively populous area I guess?

JD Would be area for SJD. Central London apparently but obviously one of many.codes for London, so may be infrequently used.

Well done, couldn't find that information for trying! That would indeed explain the scarcity... Might contact DVLA to see if there are any un-issued ones that could come up.

If jd isn't issued much then surely the dvla have thousands to sell at 250ish?
5 character dated reg look ok but 6 character dateless are possibly better IMHO.

You can ask them to auction unissued ones. I've done it several times, and luckily the ones I wanted were still available.

I done this with CRA 19H and somebody outbidded me at auction for £2k + before fees. Wasn't particularly happy with that. I should have waited till I had a bit more disposable money for a reg and then contacted them.
