Driving home from town today along a newly resurface road (resurfaced due to it been the Olympic torch route ffs!) had a stone chip come up and crack my windscreen,

Nice round chip about an inch square on the bottom passenger side corner with a few small cracks and feels like its gone through a few layers of laminate but not all the way through to the inside. Not a major problem but I have the MOT due next tuesday so just wondering if this will be a fail or just an advisory.

Cheers people.

It depends on size, if directly in front of line of sight it is maximum of 10mm diameter, if anywhere else on the windscreen it is maximum of 40mm.

Pay the insurance excess, get it repaired - it'll probably go sooner or later, next very warm/cold day and leave you in a right pickle!

My car just passed the MoT with a star crack to the left of the RVM, and one directly in line with that near to the bottom of the screen. Wasn't even mentioned on the advisories.

Yeah I will be getting it repaired, Its just if I need it done before or after the MOT, Ideally it would be good to get it doe at the same time as the garage is also doing a service before the MOT but not sure if they do windscreen repair as its the first time I've used them and forgot to ask when booking, will probably just ask when I take the car in, then take it from there.

Cheers for the responses any way.

Also it is under 40 mm (Just) and not in the direct line of sight.

Bit loathed to do this really as if the car fails its MOT on any thing expensive or the service highlights any expensive problems its going to straight to the scrappy any way, so don't want to be spending cash on a windscreen repair if its going to get turned into a metal cube next week.

If it passes I'l keep it for another year and sort the windscreen.

The trick is to see if it is likely to fail and get it done BEFORE you put it in for the MOT. The MOT tested zone is 290mm wide centred on the steering wheel within the wiper sweep. If it isn't within this zone you may still get an advisory notice. Chips within the centre of the screen are less likely to run than those on the edge. When deciding who to use try and select a repairer who specialises in repairs specifically rather than the larger replacement companies who will try and give you an excuse as to why it can't be done. Hope that helps.
