Last month I bought an old BMW 5-series. It still carries the previous owner's private plate, so the seller insisted that he had to keep the V5C until the plate was on retention. I was dubious about this but wanted the car so I went along with it on the proviso that the seller would sign a receipt, which he did.
This is all two weeks ago. However I am now worried- the tax expires at the end of this month. I have a car which probably isn't yet registered in my name so the reminder would go to the previous owner, and so would the tax disc if I renew online. I don't have a V5C so I can't get tax from the post office.
Am I now stuffed, unless the plate transfer is completed and the V5C is in my name?
I'm probably open to a flaming here for getting myself in this situation, but helpful comments will be gratefully received.

Have you rang the DVLA?
If not, it might be a good idea if you are genuinely concerned.

I would be more worried about what you told the insurance when they asked whether you were the registered keeper. You may technically uninsured.

In your situation I would have walked if he wasn't prepared to sign the V5 there and then. If he wants the plate he should have sold it before - else he should have got you to sign something to say you'd put it on retention for them.

Original question - DVLA can take bloody ages to do stuff like this. Don't know what you'll do about tax...

You don't need a V5C to tax the car at the post office, only if you do it online.

You can go to a DVLA local office and get it taxed without a V5, which you need if you don't have the V11 reminder.

Well I spoke to the previous owner and he says he's done whatever it is he needed to do with the V5C to retain his plate and he's sent the rest of it to the DVLA with my details on. That's good enough to put my mind at rest until it's far too late and my tax has expired.

Well, that will depend on what date matey boy put on that V5 I suppose. It certainly won't be the first or last time I have driven a car without having first received the amended registration certificate.

So many worriers on here.

You have done the only thing possible when buying a car with a private plste on other than they could have put the plate on retention first but as always when selling a car you are never 100% sure until someone rolls up with money.

Anyway worst case is your tax is up for renewal before the v5 is sent to you, you should be able to get the reference number off part of the v5 the owner hasnt sent to dvla and tax it.
However dvla are relatively fast at the moment. I got reg transfer through within 6working days and v5 took 9working days.
You obviously need to let insurance know when the reg change comes through and buy new plates if they didnt come with the car as it will most likely go back on its original plate.

As to insurance and registered keeper lol you are the regietered keeper just paperwork saying so havent arrived yet.

This is very true. You can't go into any thread without the naysayers invalidating your insurance or some such nonsense.

Guys, you do know what an in10 does to your insurance premiums don't you?

Worrier? Yes. But people get busted for stuff like this, and we know how the easy targets (ie otherwise law abiding people) generally get hung out to dry...

Stupidity isn't a crime. Just don't let it affect people around you wink

I have been on these forums long enough to know that your comments should be taken with a rather generous pinch of salt!

Thanks for the re-assurance, I'll just play it by ear for now. Of course I will inform my insurance company when the reg change goes through, I checked when I took out the policy that it wouldn't effect my premium. They are going to levy a £17 fee though.
For now I'm satisfied that it's all in progress and with a bit of luck the DVLA won't take too long.

IIRC (which I probably don't) you can apply for a tax disc with the new keeper supplement or a V62.

Exactly. Can't you tax it from the number on the green 'buyers slip' until the new one comes through? I'm sure I did that for a car I bought back in '07.

I think the OP mentioned that the previous owner was completing a plate transfer, so the new keeper section would have the wrong reg number on it

I don't think the OP received the new keeper supplement.
