Went to look at a new car to replace the Range Rover, but the level of incompetence was unbearable so we left after 3 hours without even finding out the cost of the car we specced up.

Us: It has to have leather seats and a panoramic roof
Salesman: That one is perfect for you
Us: Er...it does not have leather seats or a panoramic roof
Salesman: You don't need leather because we can scotchguard the seats
Us: No we want leather
Salesman: That one would be ideal for you (pointing at the same car) duh rolleyes
Throughout the 3 hours we were with him he kept trying to get us to buy the one in the showroom.

We then continued to configure what we want, whilst he looks at his stock list which he claimed had nothing for us. We asked what the lead time was so he disappeared to ask, whilst telling us to look at his computer. When he returns we point out that he has an available one in our spec on his screen.
Us: That one is perfect
Him: Ah but the spec can change
Us: So if we bought it we could change the spec
Him: No, but if you bought it it might not have the same spec as when you order it....WTF rolleyes
Us: er okay
Him: What about that one (pointing at the one in the showroom again)mad

The screen showed that delivery was set for Oct, so we pointed this out (as it was better than the Dec that he had previously suggested). Bear in mind this is nearly 3 hours later, so we are getting a bit annoyed.

We have asked several times how much it would cost for a new car with all the extras that we want. Everytime he disappears off to ask someone, then comes back without an answer.

Such incompetence really is enough to put us off the brand altogether.

Why didn't you ask for a different salesperson?

Exactly, I would have given him 30-45 mins the told him what I thought and walked.

OP why don't you try this guy, believe he's back in the LR fold, if you haven't been totally put off that is.

Because we actually wanted the car.

To be fair he was new, and to prove the point he was unsure what the (to quote him) "true load" was (through load hatch on the back seats).

He was so desperate to make a sale on the model that he had on the showroom floor that he has probably lost the showroom any chance of a purchase from us.

Also, despite the showroom being located right next to a motorway he only let us testdrive on roads with a 30limit. All this after making us wait in the petrol station because the tank was empty, on its own this would have been fine but for some reason he was messing around for so long when paying I swear he had no money and had to phone for the showroom to pay.

I will probably write the dealer principal a strongly worded email.

Not LR this time, we are looking to down size and having ruled out BMW due to the theft issue are left with just Merc and Audi estates.

Looking at an Audi S4/S6 Avant, would love a RS4/6 but can't justify the extra expense.

Porsche were great, offering a 24hr test drive. But am cancelling the test drive as to get it to the trim level we would be happy with would be extortianate (and bordering on the "exclusive" level).

He is looking at premium cars and you recommend a budget car. Not really in the same league, matter how hard you sell it.

The car that the phrase 'wouldn't touch with a barge pole' was invented for. With the purchase price and fuel costs you'll face, we wouldn't recommend it.

The problem coming from the Range Rover is that everything seems rather "lacking". OH asks if the Audi had a leather roof (which she likes) and cooled seats (which she loves)....unfortunately our financial circumstances have changed so we have to set our sights slightly lower.

Seriously? That's got to be a typo? What on earth is the point or attraction of a leather roof?!

No point, but it looks nice and adds a sense of luxury. The full fat has leather roof lining, and all the pillars etc are leather. Looks better than the usual cloth with plastic a/b pillars.
