Choosing a new car when you can't make decisions!
Discussion
Greetings forumers, long time listener (well, reader I suppose), first time caller...
I turn to you in true desperation being completely unable, and indeed ill-qualified, to pick a new car. To help you help me, a little background if you'll indulge me for just a second.
I'm currently driving a TT Mk2 Roadster, 3.2V6 Quattro. That's my fifth straigh Audi having had an A4 saloon then a 1.8T Quattro cab and a 3.0 Diesel Quattro cab - and also an A6, just the 2.0Diesel FWD. I bought the TT to get the need for a "sportscar" out of my system and needless to say like most people of my age (mid-thirties) my needs are changing and I need something with more seats if nothing else. It's a lease car and it's costing me about £1000 / month by the time you consider lease payment + fuel + insurance. Not cheap but I could afford it.
Anyway like I say my needs are changing and I need a different vehicle. I'd like to pay the least amount of money possible of course, wouldn't we all, but there's a little bit of budget - perhaps up to 10K let's say. I've looked around at all kinds of stuff and I really have no clue at all so I turn to you in desperation.
I don't carry large quantites of stuff, I don't need a Range Rover or an M5 Touring, but I'm not averse to such things although I don't think they fit the budget anyway. Two days a week my commute is 120 miles to my office, the other three days a week it's 30 feet from bed to my home office! That trip is hurting me in the TT and it's thirst for super unleaded so something borderline economical would be nice. Of course something vaguely interesting and perhaps a bit left-field would be nice too.
Stuff I've already considered: As I'm already driving a Golf in a frock, perhaps I just need a nice simple TDI Golf. I've looked at early 2000's S 320 Mercs and the equivilant 5-series BMWs, I've considered just a TDI Audi A3. I even looked at a Freelander (yes, I know, don't waste your breath).
I've also seen Jaguar XJs, the V8 one. Thirsty I know but if my £660 / month lease payment is going away I could afford the fuel. Today I got overtaken by a Mazda 3 MPS and wasn't instantly horrified - they look fairly cheap.
What do you think about perhaps a big old Honda Legend? How about a 206 GTi? Told you I was dazed and confused!
Whatever I have, age is not an issue if it's going to be reliable. Thirst is not a total disaster if I'm buying it outright. Please just don't tell me to buy a Vectra or a Mondeo. I'll listen to almost anything else I think...
I throw myself at your mercy oh forum, bowing to your considerably superior knowledge and experience. I look forward to your thoughts - thanks in advance......
