So i'vejust watcheed my beautiful 5 series drive away with another man. Gutted however life goes on.

I didn't managed to get the plate off in time but as he also has one to go on we've agreed that we'll sort it out.

Can someone explain the easiest process? It's all a bit confusing.

You fill in a V317 form and hand it in to DVLA along with £80 once updated V5 arrives

The easiest way is get it transferred before you put the car up for sale. You now need cooperation from the new owner to get the registration back, if he wants to be awkward you may never get the reg back.

It's all up to him now as he owns your plate.

the dvla dont make this easy when selling (did 2 this week).

You need the full log book to change the plate (either to put on retention or straight on your new car).

Quickest way is go to local dvla office (or by post) and put your plate on retention, takes about a week to get the retention certificate. Then takes a bit longer to get full log book back.

So when you sold the car if you gave him the new keeper slip v5c then you now cant remove the plate (daft as it may sound).

This means you will have to wait for it to be registered to the new keeper (2 weeks) and then he sends the full logbook off to apply to put it on retention with you as a nominee (£110). Again takes a week for retention cert' and 2 plus weeks for him to get log book with new reg.

This ^^^^

Looks like i've been stung in exactly the same manner.

Sold my car back in March. I trusted the guy buying the car and let him drive off in it with the promise he'd put me down as the nominated owner of the plate and i'd send him a cheque for the outstanding amount. He then kept coming up with excuses about the plate, and now he's not replying to my e-mails.

Didn't pay much for the plate, and would have had to put it on retention costing approx 105 quid. But it's still annoying.

Thanks Paul Galloway BTW

That's not so good. Always a reason to go see him?

I've just text the guy that bought my car and thankfully it's all good. He has a plate he wants to put on the car too so we're both eager to resolve.

Where you from?

As far as im aware he has no right to give your plate back. It's techincally now his as said above.

I'm hoping it's not a valuable one?

I understand that he, or the car now owns the plate.

It wasn't particularly expensive but it's of great sentimental value.

I have no doubt it will go well. i'll report back in a few weeks when we've sorted it out.

I'm in Glasgow, he's in Cambridgeshire, so not really worth it.

It was a verbal agreement between us. I knew the risks. The guy had a plate of his own he was wanting on the car. The plate didn't cost me much, and i didn't have another car to put it onto, so it was going to cost me to put it on retention. It's more annoying than anything, i'm usually a good judge of character.
