Hi I am looking for some advice on my actions for an insurance claim and would appreciate the views of some fellow PH'ers

Basically my wifes car was hit while she was parked (sat in the car but no engine running) she was waiting for the kids to come out of school and had already been parked ten mins. The guy that hit her has been decent and did stop and offered to pay for repairs outside of insurance, however as the repairs without any hire cars etc will come to about £1000 I think this will have to go through insurance. This is the first time in 13 years of driving I needed to involve insurance so I am not sure if I need to tell my insurance company. Am I correct in thinking I just get his details and the claim is just dealt with through them? There will be no counter claim as no damage to other vehicle. Thanks

It is in the terms of your insurance contract that you are required to inform them.

You need to inform your insurance ASAP and claim through them. They will deal with the other parties insurance company.

give him the quote, he might just pay it. if not get in touch with his insurer. you dont really need to let your own know about it they'll just penalise you for it.
if you ever do need to claim using your own you can just notify them then.

In theory you should let your insurance company know 'for information purposes'. If the third party insurers play ball then no need to really involve your own.

A very similar thing happened to me, my car was hit while I was parked at the roadside. I notified my insurer who dealt with everything and as it was a 'no fault' accident on my part, my excess was waived.

Of course it will affect your premiums, the car was parked somewhere it was more likely to have an accident.
If it's less that £1,000 it may be worth the other party not going through their insurance, get some quotes and find out how much it's going to cost

If you're not happy with that go through the third parties insurer - ask them for a claim form

Or you can refer it to your own insurer, they'll sort it out for you, remove your no claims until it's all sorted and claim their costs from the third party.
Either way you should at least tell your insurer just the same as you would if you scraped the car on the gatepost and got chips and dents to polish it out for you.
