Car for brother £5k to spend

My brother is useless at buying cars, and though asks for my advice, usually does his own thing and regrets it.
Last time out was a belter. He wanted something fun, not expensive to run with about £10k to spend, I gave him a plethora of options, and he bought........... a 1.4 Pugeot 308.
So this time round he says he's gonna listen, he's just moved house and has now acquired a couple of dogs, so little 2 seaters are out of the equation.
So £5k, fun*, cheap to run, can fit the 2 muts in, what would you go for? My opener was either a Swift Sport or a Panda 100hp.
Oh, the *is his fun threshold isn't as high as mine, so doesn't need caterham levels of smiles
