Hi chaps,

I've got a Calibra Ecotec which I think is beyond repair, backbox and cat fell apart, I think it's had an iffy rear-end repair (maybe just for rust), dampers and bushes past best and I'm moving, possibly next weekend.
What's the best way to get rid of it? I've found a site called cartakeback.com which says I can get £160 to scrap it but I imagine it will just be crushed. I've always had a soft spot for the Cali, any one know a sympathetic breaker in Nottingham? I'd at least like the salvageable bits be used to keep other Calis running.

More money in scrap metal than used parts: few will be interested in it for that.
Phone around your local scrappies and you'll probably get a better rate than cartakeback.

Don't really have time as I'm moving.. I guess I probably am best off getting it scrapped. It's just sad. It may not be a good example of it but I think Calis are a bit special.. awful handling but moderately quick and a classic design (imho).
But the chassis/BIW is past usefulness, would just be nice if someone could harvest it for useful bits.

It has got to be worth saving, maybe put it on the Calibra forums for sale?

Park it on your drive with a For Sale £250 in the window. It'll be nicked in a few days...

Sad fact that many cars like this are worth much more as parts than as the whole scrapped.

In the currently widespread "must be a diesel and any 2 litre car is a gas guzzler" mindset, I tried unsuccessfully to get £800 for a tidy P-Reg Rover 620ti two years ago. It had long tax and MoT so I used it for the best part of a year and then as I had some space, broke it for parts. It made more than my asking price so as I'd used it for a year, double bonus. I took the stripped near empty rolling shell to a local breakers with any old scrap engine in the passenger footwell and kept the decent 16" OE Alloy Wheels. I got £178 for that scrap shell.

Anyone in the OP's position with a half decent oldish car, should they have both time and space available, should strip it for spares.

I have noticed that during the past year, there has been a steady number of Calibras turning up in local yards. They must be becoming a rare car now.

There are not that many left looking at http://howmanyleft.co.uk/combined/Calibra.

Having issues with mine currently (not starting with diagnostics indicating no fuel reaching injectors) and I've been considering scrapping mine too as the cost of keeping it running is now starting to outweigh its value and enjoyment factor.

These older cars are not rocket science and most things should be a relatively easy DIYer fix. Can be costly if getting professionals to sort even minor problems. If it's also your daily driver that does not help things.

We run three Rover 620ti in my family and have done for a good few years now. Cost peanuts to run and fix when needed which is not that often, particularly so considering one is showing 188,000 miles and sixteen years old now.

Have you tried replacing the fuel pump relay? located below ECU behind drivers kick panel

Also, quick question, does the EML flash when cranking it?

Relay swapped, can sometimes hear pump prime when ignition on, fuel hoses to injector rail both dry. EML solid whilst cranking (so should not be immobilizer).

OP, get on clubcalibra.net and/or Migweb.

A guy called Cavtastic (on cc.net) breaks cars for a side line, like you said it would be good to keep the parts available to those of us that struggle to get parts.

He's also on migweb as 'nemisis'

Great minds aye?

What code are you getting?
  • edit to add, if fuel rail is dry then its the pump, cant be alot else.

Had it listed on CC for months now and not had any interest. Obviously want to be sure it goes to a properly licensed dismantler too.
Will try Migweb I guess..
edit: maybe not, must be registered for 60 days and have >100 posts before I can offer anything for sale rolleyes
