Petrol vs Diesel ...
Discussion
Curious as to peoples thoughts really ...
Found myself fancying a chelsea tractor for a few reasons and initially was looking at diesel plants - specifically looking at the X5 diesel. Playing with a budget around 5-6k means I'm looking at high-ish mileage. Then I started to notice the petrol ones with lower mileage, better specs in general terms and a few other options in terms of marques.
Considering the bulk of the mileage is going to be short-ish runs (90%) as opposed to long motorway journeys I started to wonder whether having a diesel would really make that much difference?! That and my current work-hack being a 323i se actually gives me better mpg than my old diesel sprinter van did on distance and local so I'm finding it harder and harder to be certain on a diesel when the petrols seem so much more appealing!

How many miles per annum do you do? Not many surely if you are just doing short runs. Yes, the diesel will have better mpg and have lower tax, but as you say for the same money you could have a lower mileage higher spec petrol. This isn't one that people are going to give you a definitive answer on. It'll be whatever suits you best.
The 3.0i X5 is a good car, few known faults.
The 3.0d X5 has things like swirl flaps etc and more known faults, however...
...the 3.0i is a bit of a poison chalice of a car and you'll wait a while to sell one if you tire of it. Don't buy one at a high price unless you plan on keeping it for a while.

We underwrote one at £4,000 - a 2003 3.0i Sport with 90K miles and 19s in blue metallic with a view to advertising it for £5695.The 3.0d X5 has things like swirl flaps etc and more known faults, however...

The owner took the initiative and put it on at £5200 and got £4950 for it in his hand within 6 hours.
Right spec, right price always sells.

This all depends on how many miles you're going to be doing. Under any conditions the diesel will be more frugal. But if you're only doing 3000 miles a year in it, then the actual cost difference might be minimal. If you're doing 15,000 miles a year then the fuel cost difference might be significant.Found myself fancying a chelsea tractor for a few reasons and initially was looking at diesel plants - specifically looking at the X5 diesel.
