Hello,

A younger family member of mine has recently bought a classic mini, while having seat belts in the front it doesn't in the back. It's a C Reg 1985 Mini Mayfair. Did this originally come with seat belts and if not is it legal to have passengers in the back or not?

Thanks smile

If you get three in the back they can't move around anyway since they're wedged in so tight.

Seat belt mounting points should be in the car so belts can be fitted. If fitted the law requires that they should be worn.

As above. The mounting points will be there so you could easily DIY it - they'll be about £30 each side.
Doubt you'd bother with a centre one.

I don't think you'll find any mounting points tbh.

In a car made in 1985 you should.

I have a 1985 Mini City E as a very long term project - and the concensus is right, there are no rear seatbelts fitted, but the mounting points are fitted to allow them to be bolted in, so fitment should be dead easy.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So if there not fitted they don't need to be worn and this is completely legal? Just in case any of us get stopped, although unlikely anyone would be in the back very often at all. Also guess this would be limited to 2 people and not 3 (if you could fit 3 in there!)

As for pictures someone asked:

Definatley has rear seat belt mounting points. But just get rid of the rear bench it will get in the way when he uses the mounts for his four point harnesses for his bucket seats. But by then hell have a 1340cc mg metro engine in too smile like my c reg Mayfair did.

Ha, indeed. Believe he is saving up for an engine conversion when he is 21, would be far too expensive to insure before then. Has a few little mods already and is a blast to drive, even it is is a 998cc biggrin

Good lad smile if he wants to go the VTEC route let me know as I've done the same with my Mini - alternatively I've got a 1275 lump gathering dust in my garage which can be yours for a pittance!

At the moment he is looking at various engines I think, not really too sure what to go for either. If you've got any information I can pass on that would be great!

Thanks
