Mazda 6 vs Mondeo vs Accord vs X Type
Discussion
Hi,
I am thinking of buying a new car with a budget of around £4k, I have the following criteria:
1. Derv
2. Leather trim
3. Reliable
4. 05 onwards ideally
So flicking through autotrader and various motoring websites has led me to the four cars in the title. For my budget I seem to be looking at year 03-06 relatively high mileage examples of each of these (bar perhaps the Mondeo, which is my least favourite but seems so universally acclaimed I have to consider it).
If anyone could share any experiences or knowledge with one or more of these cars, I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Hmm, Honda Accord would be my choice, Mazda 6 diesels are known for engine failure due to DPF issues and the Mondeos have dual mass flywheel issues and it costs nearly a grand to replace a clutch! The X type is basically a diesel Mondeo.
The Accord is cam chain driven and should go on and on! Thats where my four grand would go if I was buying a diesel, out of your selection.
My dad drives an 04 Mazda 6, and while i do like the outside styling, the interior is rather meh, i cant imagine it being even half as nice a place to be as the jag. My dads car is a petrol and base level trim though, so perhaps one with cowpeels on the seat is nicer to hang around in.
You don't want a Mazda 6 diesel - unreliable.
X Types are rubbish.
Mondeo is good apart from the interior and image
I know nothing about the Honda
However I bought my wife a Mazda 6 Sport 06 with 50k with leather, Nav etc for £2500 then spent £1500 on an LPG conv. and she gets equivalent of 60mpg without the worry of DPF, injectors, pump or turbo failing.

Oh right, so if you could get a Mondeo with a better interior and a more "luxury-brand" image, it would be a good car? X-Type anyone?Mondeo is good apart from the interior and image
I did.
Wife had a Mondeo - great car.
Then had an X type - nice interior but it drives like a bag of s
t. Steering, suspension, power delivery are all far worse than the Mondeo.Yes it has FSH and I've had it all checked by Jag specialists inc full alignment - even the specialist admitted the diesel X types were crap

Up your budget to £5k ish and get a mk4 mondeo.

Last September I paid £4600 for an 04 Accord 2.2 ictdi with 75K on the clock, FSH, Leather etc. I compared mk3 Mondeo's, BMW 320d and 330d's, Saab's, Vectra's, and any number of French and Italian Cars including 156's and 159's and Decided to go with what is supposed to be the quietest, highest reving Diesel in it's class. I could have bought a newer car for the money, but I've not yet been disappointed. Couldn't and wouldn't stretch to a mk4 mondeo, purely due to the image conjurred up by My wife's mocking of "mondeo man".
I've got a Mazda 6 diesel that was around the same budget you're looking at. I've only had it since January but so far it hasn't cost me a penny. The handling is good and it's fairly well kitted out with everything I need. The only thing I would say is mine has already had the DPF replaced on it so that might be helping with my reliability so far.
Although feel free to let me know what I'm letting myself in for in the future.

This forum's LSI (Life Saab itch) has had a rather interesting experience with the derv Mazda 6. PM him or search for his threads on the subject, it could save you a lot of money.
yeah, really not worth the hassle.
Help please. Buying this would be idiotic wouldn't it?

I've looked at Mondeo but the ST TDCI version, which seems a very sensible and fun choice, I'm not too worried of what people think, as long as I enjoy what I drive.
Mazda 6, no idea
Accord, to me looks like an ungly space ship but supposed to be really good
X-Type, a Mondeo with an higher price tag
what about an 03 BMW E46 330d Touring?
