Last week I bought a 2004 Mecedes E220 cdi Elegance,it's a six speed manual and does 50 mpg without really trying. Perfect for a couple of summer holiday trips, saving fuel and wear and tear ( and French parking bumps) on my Chrysler 300, which to be honest I don't have 100% faith in and 0% faith in getting repaired if it broke down in Provence .
But... It's feckin' orrible, cramped, flimsy too much like a dodgy unlicensed London minicab and just a nothing car. So it's going up for sale,I think there's probably a grands profit in it,which I will 'invest' in a perfect holiday car.
Criteria;
1. Room for five adults
2.Capable of 30mpg on a run
3. Not embarrassing ( to stroppy teenage daughters)
4. Stand a fighting chance of selling it on at the end of the summer.
Looking for some outside the old Merc/Jag/BMW barge ideas, although W140 S Class is a distinct possibility at the moment.

Thought of something from the Land of the Rising Sun?

Early GS or IS?

W124 estate, perfect (except for the 30 mpg bit) and not sure if stroppy teens will approve, although doubt any teen will approve of a car costing £1000.

Not averse to a big Toyota,in a previous life I had a couple of LS 400's ,but for a grand they seem to be too scruffy around the edges. IS is too small, but an early GS300 Sport...it's on the list.

As you suspect, these are on the 'Dont even think about it,you sad old loser' list along with Citroen Xms, Scorpios and any MPVs. Although the W124 cab my brother recently bought is considered way cooler than their mom's CLK, so there's some hope for them.

Hmm, sounds tempting. I'll take it! And for only a grand more than you paid, you say? Bargain! wink

What about a 2009 Chrysler 300 diesel? Seems like a perfect choice.

Then sell it, whats the point in having a big diesel barge like that if you hide it away when faced with probably the only thing its any good at?

"Stand a fighting chance of selling it on" and you bought a manual E-Class?!

I hope it's got leather or someone gave it to you! smile

Seriously, you can sell it, but it will probably go abroad although even the usual export markets *really* hate the W211 (because it is flimsy, cramped.....oh hang on).

Now you sound like my wife!
To be fair it does 1500 miles a week cruising up and down this country, I've just got an irrational feeling that it'd cost more to take it away than use something else.

Why? It's a 3 year old diesel powered saloon car not a Ferrari F430 Scuderia. If it costs so much its chepaer to buy an entirely different car just to go on holiday with then why bother with it? It's only real plus point is that its economical and comfortable.

Volvo's sound like a good idea. S80 or an ex-Police V70 T5.
And yes, confused buyer I've already had someone wanting to ship it to Cyprus. Might sell it to him yet,but ever the optimist I just know there's someone out there who likes changing gear and thinks velour is ultra stylish and will give me a bit more money.

Don't understand.

The 300C is pretty much a Merc. W210 in more glitzy clothes, so it's no more likely to break than a similarly aged Mercedes and it's also just as easy as a Mercedes to fix if it does break down in Provence.

I did say it was irrational, although I'm a bit obsessive about my cars and the thought of it getting filled with sand, crumbs and spilt drinks, let alone knocks and scratches to the paintwork fill me with dread. I use an old Discovery to avoid that in this country but it's too slow and rattly for long journies and I won't replace it with a newer , better one due to an irrational attachment to it.

Go for the next version and in S280 form they get 27/28mpg on a run, much less around town though.

Thanks to Strawman for the answer I wanted!

As for the consensus opinion that I should just take the Chrysler ,and man the f+** up. You're no fun at all and I can't believe fellow PHers have talked me out of buying another car. Maybe if I ask on Mumsnet someone will suggest a GTB Legacy or a ratty XJR!
