There are alot of depreciation threads going at the moment and it makes me wonder.I understand that people do not wont to be losing 30k on a car but at the end of the day does it matter? I thought the whole thing is we buy what we love? I understand family etc comes into the equation.Maybe I dont understand because the most expensive thing I have bought was 1500euro and that was a bike and I own a porsche(bottom of the range mind you:P) so maybe I am just foolish and dont understand but I always got the feeling most people only live once? feel free to prove me wrong as this is not a bashing thread just curiosity! thanks all.

no i couldnt care less, how many people even pay for the total sum of a new car up front anyway, and on used cars why should it matter anyway you use that car for a time and its worth less at the end. if we worried about it on everything, no one would own clothes, a mobile, a laptop, a tv, a camera, a car, a kettle, a sofa or anything

very few things are worth more than what you paid for them.

Less depreciation = more money to piss away on the next toy come upgrade time. It's just that simple. Can't say I've ever been too concerned, but then I've only ever owned a few new cars, and I'm more than happy to let some other sucker eat the depreciation first when it comes to fun stuff. Bikes excepted. smile

When I buy a car do think about depreciation a lot being a student. First car did 1 year motoring cost me £50 my MG did 1 years and 14k miles cost me £150 and this clio 172 should hopefully be worth similar to what I paid in a years time as I got it pretty cheap smile
Next car plan to get a 130i and hopefully again run it a year with as little lost as possible that way can upgrade quicker and enjoy more cars whilst I can just makes more sense to me financially for now at least.
Oh and my mini I paid £1600 and was offered nearly 2750 for it the first show I went too in it but I never intend on selling that car anyway smile

I bought my first brand new car about 3 years ago and it now worth half about what I paid for it according to WBAC. Do I care? Hell NO! Life is for the living! I can afford to take the hit so I do. Some people like to go to the concert, buy a rolex, buy a new shoe every week, buy a B&O hifi e.t.c, I just choose to piss my money away on a brand new car!

I'd never buy a car if I couldn't afford to lose its entire value... but that doesn't mean I want to.

As the OP of one of the recent depreciation threads, let me give you my logic for looking for a low depteciation car.

I want to own a fun, interesting car that will be enjoyable to drive and give me some pride of ownership. I also realise that there are some forms of driving (commuting to station etc) that are not fun and should be treated as such.

So, I have a dilemma - I need to do boring miles on a day-to-day basis but I also want to enjoy some fun driving and have an interesting car.

I could buy one car to cover all bases, maybe a swift mid-size hatch or saloon. How about a Golf GTI, BMW 135i, or something similar? Lots of people do.

Or, I could buy something fun for the weekends like a Posche 964 and complement that with a cheap "appliance" type car that will do the station run, get parking dents, run mis-matched tyres and generally I won't give a st about.

For me, this second option is by far the more palatable, mostly becasue it's interesting. It also gives you the option to change cars more frequently without worrying too much about the cost... bored of the 964? I'll just sell it and get something else. And because I haven't done many miles in it, it'll still be worth decent money. Can I interest you in a TVR T350, Sir? Why not?

So, the fun and interesting argument is strong to me. However, the financial one is also very important: with the choice of losing a lot of money on a car or losing a small amount of money, I know which one I'd prefer.

For some people the allure of a modern car is the deciding factor. It was for me too. But now I've done that and am looking for something else.
