Infotainment Systems that reproduce your smartphone
Discussion
So, as per release this week, the Vauxhall/Opel ADAM (sic) will just reproduce your smartphone's screen on its own touchscreen:
Those phones have a car mode, so that all important buttons are on the home screen, and thus on the car's main screen. They're customisable too, so you can choose what you'll really need.
Seeing that testing and qualification in the automotive industry is a long process, there must be aftermarket unit available already, non? All they'd need is an amplifier, a touchscreen, USB interface and replication/mirroring function. Anyone seen anything like that already?

The Vauxhall Adam’s interior features a new infotainment system that will stop in-car technology from becoming outdated and obsolete soon after the car leaves the showroom.
The as-yet-unnamed system has as its focal point a large, seven-inch touchscreen in the centre console, but it doesn’t include any typical infotainment features, such as sat-nav.
Instead, the driver plugs a smartphone into the system and the operating system is mirrored on screen. It is then possible to play and control apps — such as music, video and navigation — on screen.

the top-of-the-range system will initially be compatible with Android and Apple iOS operating systems. It’s likely to cost less than £300. A CD/radio with USB and aux-in ports and Bluetooth will still be standard on all models, regardless of whether or not the new system has been chosen.
That's exactly, what I've been waiting for. I change my phone all 1...3 years, and it is more capable than any infotainment system delivered by the OEM.The as-yet-unnamed system has as its focal point a large, seven-inch touchscreen in the centre console, but it doesn’t include any typical infotainment features, such as sat-nav.

Awesome, so in the future, people will be scouring ebay to pick up an ancient phone that works with their car.

I understand that will be a solution that will work with future phones, hopefully equally versatile as the 3.5mm AUX-socket.
I do as well understand that the optional smartphone 7" screen is additional to the standard system, "A CD/radio with USB and aux-in ports and Bluetooth will still be standard on all models, regardless of whether or not the new system has been chosen."; so people can still carry boxes of CDs with them. Compact cassettes and vinyl records are not confirmed though.

I've digged a little further - the underlying standard for smartphone replication is called MirrorLink.
There's some aftermarket headunits already from JVC and Sony; though they are just normal CD-receivers with an added protocol. Things should become interesting as soon as there are standalone touchscreens with amplifiers available
