Hi All,

Just last night, over a couple of pints we had the following discussion.

So what do PH think??

This has nothing to do with practicality!!

PURELY down to pace, speed, handling and presence.........so over to you....

Examples include:

M3
M5
RS4
RS6
E63
S63
ETC...

So can todays super saloons beat the 996TT.

If my plan to get an S8 works, I will let you know.

But it really does depend on what *exactly* you mean by "beat".

Straight line drag race: some of them might come close; some of them might even edge ahead.

Track: no chance. Too much weight/bulk in the saloons to live with a 6T.

"Presence" is too subjective to be a useful criteria, IMO.

If the 996 turbo we are talking about is the Turbo S, then I don't think any supersaloon short of a Brabus will be beating one. The Turbo S has "only" 450bhp vs some of the higher outputs from the monster-engined saloons, but is a smaller, lighter and sleeker car. While the clever suspension, huge tyres and massive engine outputs might keep them together - I don't think the even the Turbo S would leave many modern super saloons for dead, the saloon cars will be working much harder and putting much more wear on their components to do a pace that comes naturally to the 911.

Depends who it's aimed at - some will see a Turbo and see no difference from a Carrera 2, and would also see no difference between an M5 and a 520d.

Depends on the supersaloon. An LC or Alpina B10 BT would have much greater wow factor for me personally

+1

I wouldn't care if I saw a 911 Carrera on the road, but I would start jumping if it turned out to be a rare RS of some sort. Same thing goes for 5-series vs. M5s. Spotting an M5 is always a pleasure, any generation, because I always think "that guy... He knows exactly what he's up to".

But on the 996 Turbo, I would much rather have an E92 M3. Much more fun. If we are going to talk about 911 GT3s, that's a whole different car/debate and there's no super saloon that will come close to being as being as pure as all any generation GT3.

996tt will remap to 480bhp without breaking into a sweat , the standard car runs such low boost. X50 will remap to over 500 bhp.
