well i think ive given up on the kit car idea as what i want is way too expensive smile
So my new idea is to buy a car strip it, tune it and use it as a weekend toy (maybe track days)
budget is up to 9/10k including performance parts. MPG not really a issue smile insurance.... may be as im 20 but 21 soon so planning on doing it up until then. (if i cant insure it, it'll become a track car smile)
The idea is that i dont buy a tuned one to start with so i know the engine hasn't been thrashed about and i'd like to work on it myself.
My idea so far is a mitsubishi gto twin turbo. seen a few around 3-5K mark in good nick which i've hear are really good for tuning and reliability.
I've considered the toyota supra but its just.... too common? The AWD part for the GTO is quite appealing to me too.
What do you lot think so far? what car would you recommend?
Edit: im off out for a meal now so ill read posts later/ cheeky look whilst on phone wink

If you want to do track days, sack the GTO/3000GT - complex and far too heavy.

You are still stripping a car that weighs around 1.5 to 1.7 tonnes - even if you remove the interior etc its still going to be a heavy beast that will munch tyres / brakes on a track day.

Suppose "/ normal day to day use though? Still want to use it on roads with the odd track day/ drag strip

Mk2 escort.

RWD.
Plenty of bits available to upgrade/repair/restore as you go.
Simple and easy to work on.
I'd guess that insurance would be reasonable.

You may find an ex competition car with cage etc.
Just look for rot - sills, inner wings, chassis legs and umm.. everywhere else really.

Yeah they are expensive but you have a decent budget. If you get a 4 door prices come down further..
I'd buy something under budget to allow for changes

Far cheaper to start with a Chevette.

However I chose an RX7 FD as they already have decent:
Looks
Performance
Brakes
Suspension
LSD

They do however weigh 1250kg as opposed to the Chevette / Escort at 800kg (IIRC) However by the time you've stripped the RX and added decent bits to the Escort the gap would be closed to perhaps 200kg and it's dead easy to get 350+bhp from an RX7 and fairly expensive to transplant a tuned Cossie into the Escort/Chevette.
