This next paragraph really needs an interrobang. Oh well...

You know that thing where friends and family always ask you stuff about cars because "you really like CARS don't you!?" - but they don't comprehend that although you definitely like cars, you really only like the ones that are awesome or loud or stupid or fun or just loud, and you're not actually a human version of the Which? Guide to mundane transport.

Well... that.

Anyway...

Apparently one of my farthest away and dearest is looking for something that plainly does not exist. He needs a car that does the following things:

Has a massive load space.
Is a brilliant comfy place to sit whilst driving hundreds of miles.
Is powerful enough to make good progress.
Can return 40mpg plus with a decent range.
Isn't st.
Costs about £5000.

I have become afflicted with irrational flummox and the only thing I've been able to suggest is some kind of LPG'd medium sized estate..... like an LPG 535 Touring or Omega Estate or something.... and then living with a st range.

Either that or an MX5 and a trailer.

Love you, bye! x

Volvo V70 D5? - Near 200 bhp then re-mappable...

if less space is needed there is the V40 with the same engine which retains the seats.

Other than that what about something like a Saab 9-5 tourer, i think they did a 150bhp diesel which is admittedly a bit slower.

Reasonably fast to most people = 150+bhp not the 300+ we consider as reasonable....admittedly

+2. Anything BMW and diesel will incur a (dis)proportionate BMW/diesel tax, so less VFM.

Volvo V70 D5 (with a manual 'box!)
Alfa 156 SW 2.4 JTD? Boots on the small side, mind.

Nissan Navara.

Diesel engine won't do 40mpg with a load and driven enthusiatically, but will be "reasonable".

New ones are very comfy and have car-like handling (as opposed to clapped out pickup handling)

Skoda Octavia estate with a diesel engine.

The 2L PD engined version does 51mpg combined and 128mph (actual figures in everyday use may vary)

Yes. Go bang lots, and expensive to fix (assuming you can find a place that will touch them) and/or replace.

This or a Diesel superb if you can get one for the price, nope not the estate anyway too new, but the saloon is still worth looking at. If your relation can get past the badge...

Bigger, better ride though slightly worse economy, but still over the 40mpg.

My Octavia Scout is bulletproof, spacious, comfortable, and economic....

Simes.
