Biggest 4 cyl engine?

What was the biggest 4 cyl engine in common usage? Biggest I can recall is Vauxhall & Ford both had 2.3l variants and Porsche a 2.9l which was supposedly a bit rough, though I've never experienced one...

Google doesn't seem terribly helpful.

Well the porsche 944 S2 and 968 was a 2990cc so as good as 3.0.

It was a smooth engine, not sure where you read otherwise. But they used balance shafts to reduce vibration and make it smooth, which from my memory (I wrote my 968 off about 9 years ago!) it was.

I think that was the largest production 4 cylinder engine, but I'm sure someone here will soon correct me if I'm wrong!

Cheers. I'd had an inkling that there was a v4 or flat 4 that was around 4l (Fiat, Lancia or similar), but I think my brain is speaking bollux to me

A couple of others that deserve a mention:
The 1909 Benz 200 hp "Blitzen-Benz" may have had the largest-ever road-going four, at 21.5 litres.
The Ford Model A had a 3.3-litre engine, which is very big for a four by modern standards.

Fiat S76 - 28.3 litres. Not common usage, but pretty impressive.

Cummins B series is probably the most common "big" 4 pot on UK roads - 4 litre engine, powers all sorts of things, DAF 7.5 tonners, midi buses etc.
