Alternator broken

The alternator has gone kaput on my MX5, until I can get hold of another one does anyone know about how long Ill last on a fully charged battery, work is 14 miles there and back, will I make it? I have a charger so I can fully charge it each night.

When the alternator went on my mates 2003 Vectra, it lasted a few hours (2 or 3).
Maybe go for a test drive/leave it running to see how long it will last without worrying about getting to work?

Provided you do not use any unnecessary electrics ~ so traveling at night not advisable ~ a 28 mile round trip should be fine provided your battery is healthy and can take a full overnight charge.

If you are not certain what shape your battery is in, take along another known good one if that is possible.

I've driven from just south of Oxford to just outside Bath with no alternator.

That included a couple of engine starts/stops and using lights, radio, heater etc.


I'd say you'll be fine but carry some jump leads!

What is wrong with the alternator? Might be worth removing the drive belt if it's something that might cause it to seize or catch fire!
