Well The Big Gay Hearse (1997 V70 2.5T) has died - again.

I've got £5-6k to spend on a new (to me) estate (for dogs and general lugging). I've been to see three Saab 9-3 estates today, which frankly bore no resemblance to the adverts.

So what are my options? Ideally I'd like something smaller than the V70, so thinking V50 D5, Saab 9-3 1.9 TiD 150, BMW 320/330d touring...

What am I missing? What about the ubiquitous Golf TDi, or a Seat (yes I know they're not estates). I don't care much for the Octavia, but I'd consider an Audi A4 or a VW Passat. Of course I want toys and good economy too.

Bumped from the depths of page two.

I HATE buying vehicles as I always feel I'm getting ripped off by dealers.

Accord Tourer?

You'll not get an auto diesel for your budget but £5000 should get you a decent diesel in EX spec.

I Can say from experience that 320d's are really quite small, especially compared to most volvo's!

5-6k should get you a minty fresh e39 530d msport estate with lots of spare cash?!

I'd be looking for an earlyish 330d auto.. Tourings are rare and appear to attract a premium.

But you should find one in budget.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'd decided against a 9-5 or a 5 series as I wanted a smaller vehicle, which was why I was leaning towards V50/3 series/9-3.

I realise I'll not get the same performance of a 2.5T petrol with a diesel. Or will I with a newer diesel engine? But will that compromise economy if I go for a D5 or 330 or equivalent?

You won't feel at all short changed with a 330d... Even the original 184hp lump is good.

Go drive one.

I went from a similar vintage V70 to a V50 T5 and to be honest it was a bit of a disappointment. Wasn't a bad car by any stretch but it just didn't feel quite so ridiculously well built or quirky. It's definitely less premium.

I reckon I'd go for a mint E39 530D Touring with some change for any issues. It's commodious but a lot more lithe than the V70 and thus feels smaller and more wieldy.

I have had a last of the old shape W203 Mercedes C Class estate for the last year and I have covered 20k miles in it. From the facelift in 2005 the rusting issues the earlier ones were prone to were pretty much sorted and the overall quality seemed to be very much improved.
It has been a very nice car and has not caused me a problem. It is now on 125K miles.

The boot space is down on the V70 but large enough for camping holidays with the dog, only drawback is the sloping tailgate if you are loading it up to the roof.

I've got the C320 CDI and it is a fantastic engine, pretty quick for diesel (0-60 in just under 7 seconds) & not bad economy (37mpg for 20k done) for the performance.

I think they are a bit of a bargain compared to the equivalent BMW 330d, they may not be as good to drive but overall a very nice package.

O/T Can't beleive this is my 1st post.
