Had an argument with a low loader
Discussion
Oh well, my little work horse has lost a fight with a low loader today.. Bugger.
We were both sitting side by side at a roundabout, in separate lanes. I was turning left, he was turning right. As we both drove forward, he swerved into my lane (having not looked in his mirror) to get his large vehichle round the small roundabout and the side/back of his lorry did this:

Smashed two alloys (luckily have spares), I'll need a new wing, mirror and bumper mount.
Lesson learned, give these guys a WIDE berth on the approach to roundabouts.

or any bend or curve in the road for that matter. If it's a 'full fat' low loader with a low bed in the middle then it'll be rear wheel steering and more than likely have a big yellow sign stuck to the back of the trailer saying CAUTION REAR WHEEL STEERING in huge letters and accompanied by some yellow beacons or strobes. The trailer is self steered by a plate on the trailer coupling with the prime mover (known as the fifth wheel). When the prime mover turns to the left or the right, the plate on the fifth wheel coupling also turns at the same time which is hooked up to the trailer wheels and turns them in the opposite direction by a similar amount. For the most part this is great for us that drive them as it means you can get round a lot of bends and corners without needing to swing out, but if you have a tight turn to make and but not enough road width you end up with the trailer swinging itself onto the pavement when trying to make a tight right turn
. Negotiating smallish roundabouts is also a pain in the arse as people alongside you don't except the rear of the trailer to suddenly come at them sideways, as you have recently experienced
, but PITA or not a professional driver would (should) make allowances and keep their eyes peeled for it happening.
Good illustration here at 0:45 of the rear wheel self-steering in action : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&...
