Mrs phoned me up, she's on her way to work

she's had to stop on the hard shoulder 'because the car was going really slow' set off again, 'hardly made it up the hill' (this is not even a hill, just a very slight slope)

insists handbrake wasn't on

All this came on suddenly, previously she'd been doing 120 kmh

eventually made it to work, parked up and rang me again;
Me - "can you rev the engine up with the clutch in?"
"huh?"
eventually explained that intricate operation, Yes, she says, it revs up
asked her to feel if one of the wheels was hot, "maybe"

"oh I know, it's just the petrol" she says (it's diesel) "the light has just come on"

hmm

and there's possibly something dripping underneath, maybe oil

and it made some sort of funny noise when she switched it off

Breakdown man will be there later, when she finishes work

answers on a postcard please

Dripping underneath makes me think oil filter has burst or fallen off, car has run out of oil, check engine light. I hope it isn't.

Carpet bunched up under the throttle pedal so it wont push all the way down? silly

Depends on whether it's really dripping oil, really. If it is, that sounds expensive.

If it is a TDI (even an older one) then yes I'd have thought so. yes

carpet would be the ideal scenario biggrin

'expensive' = scrap the car, it's worth nothing and has a few other faults biggrin

The dripping might be a red herring if she's had the air con on.

I bet the dripping is the aircon condenser

Are you sure she's driving the Focus and not got it confused with a washing machine or tumble dryer?

Odd one. The dripping is almost certainly air con condenser, as anything else that could be a symptom would be less "dripping" and more "pissing everywhere" when you had the engine running.

Surely she could not possibly miss or forget to mention temperature warnings all over the place, so overheating seems unlikely, but then if it's had a catastrophic oil leak and ran dry I wouldn't expect it to do another hundred yards, never mind get her to work.

My money is on exceedingly low engine oil which is now rapidly becoming inadequate to lubricate the engine properly. Don't drive it another foot.

the drip (if it is a drip) is not AC because the AC doesn't work ;D
