Hi guys.

I'm picking up a new car on Sunday afternoon. Problem being I only got it cheap if I came to pick it up this weekend. The car has been off the road for a few weeks because the guy got a company car and it's just not been used. Because of this, he has cancelled his insurance because it's off the road and it hasn't been taxed. My insurance starts from 00:01 Sunday morning so I can drive it back insured, but I'm not going to be there in time to tax it. The car is 300 odd miles away so the guy that owns it has said he's happy to tax it for me.

If I send him a copy of my insurance certificate that I can download from the Aviva website, and my name and details for the V5, will he be able to take those to the post office with the reminder and tax it? Even though he's not me and the insurance doesn't start till Sunday, can he tax it from Sunday but buy the tax disc tomorrow if you see what I mean?

Thanks

Hairy Bob

You would need the car insured at the time of taxing, not insured on the following day.

So they won't be able to post date it on the computer system so it's effective from Sunday when the insurance kicks in?

It will be 'effective' from the start of the month (i.e. July) but you can't actualy purchase the tax without having insurance on the car.

Won't have a valid disc to display. frown

Think it's going to be easier if I tax it Saturday and try to pick it up a day early.

Can't tax online without active insurance (and visible in the insurance database), or without a V5 in the owners name.

Is it really likely to matter? I did a 300 mile round trip last week with no disc up having taxed the car online. At one point I parked in front of a traffic warden who was checking tickets (pay and display area). He could clearly see it was out of date as he was standing on that side of the car but said nothing.
