18 months into ownership and I'm getting itchy feet again. I normally keep cars for 3-4 years and choose a car I think I'll be happy with on that basis, but next time I'm going to pick something I can change after a year or so without having to commit financial suicide. Does anyone else get bored quite quickly?

< 12 months is quick.

ETA longest I've ever had a car is 2 years.

Life is waaaaaaay too short to keep the same car for 3-4 years! Think of all the awesome ones out there that you're missing out on.

I barely keep cars over a year, my current car I was looking to replace after 3 months and ~500 miles! Insurance has happened my decision for another 2 months though.

I've had eleven cars in two years. smile

I'm trying really hard to keep my current car, but even so I find myself tempted to get something else.

I've had my current car for over five years now and it still makes me grin just as much as when I first drove it.

Just sold the Alfa 156 GTA after 8 years of ownership and loved every minute. Viper will be 10 years this year and MR2 Turbo for 5 years before that - I keep cars way too long!

Usually after about 6 months except for the Mitsi VR4 and the 2x Scoobies I have owned which all lasted more than 18 months. One of the reasons I own 3 cars

I've had my MX5 turbo for 5 years, Elise for 4. No plans to change either of them, unless the MOT goes badly for the MX5.

The trick is to have a fleet. It's easy to get bored if you don't have contrast. I managed 7 years with a mk2 CRX because my other cars during that time were RWD, mid or front engined and some of them had turbos. I managed 7 years with my mk2 MR2 because I had several sheds during that time, and driving the MR2 always felt special as a result.

The other trick is to never buy boring cars. How anyone can live with something normal for any length of time is beyond me.

A life spent constantly swapping between various tedious hatchbacks would kill me.

From your garage:

Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXI
Seat Leon 1.6 SX
Citroen Xsara 1.6 LX
Ford Fiesta 1.25 LX

There was cool stuff in there as well, but I got bored of those four just cut&pasting them, so I can understand why you'd need to keep swapping cars.

As I collect my new car, I'm thinking about my next one.

6 - 12 months is good for me.

I don't get bored easily as I modify mine when I get bored, I'm always looking for ways to improve the performance. When I picked up my ATR I thought 'This is superb, it really needs nothing changing'. Three months in and I'm already looking at uprated dampers, adjustable suspension arms, four pot brakes, an uprated LSD and final drive and a camshaft upgrade to improve the drive...

So maybe that should actually be 'I get bored very quickly'?

Depends on the car. I still really enjoy my 205 GTI. Where as other cars have come and gone. Had the pug over 4 years now.

I created a spreadsheet to workout just how much I'd lost over my last 5 cars.

I wish I'd never bothered, the number was horrific. weeping

I've had 14 cars in 10 years of driving, not as many as some posters but still enough to leave my family and friends frequently bemused.

Most have been warm/hot hatches with a couple of quirky classics thrown in for good measure. However now i'm 28 and insurance is becoming less of an issue, plus I have a job I can walk to so practicality isn't too concerning - My plan is that once i've paid off my current MK5 Golf GTI I plan to get something suitably PH - Right now i'm perving excessively on 993 Carreras and Z3M Coupes, I suppose next year (or next week) my preferences might be different.

What car is it? Buying a boring car or totally the wrong car for what you really want is easy to get bored with tbh. But that's not the fault of the car but the muppet that handed over the money for it wink

In 11 years of driving think i'm on car number 44 now. I get bored very quickly (wife thinks i have ADHD, she could well be right..). If it lasts 6 months with me thats good going.

When (if..? not looking likely at the minute...) a get a 911 i'll probably keep that a while.

On the plus side, I don't suffer from the effects of depreciation too much!

Normally a year in I start having thoughts of changing and then 6 months later I'm in something else. Really depends what it is, I didn't get bored of my last car but as I was simply using it to go to work and back I couldn't see the point in a car focused on handling so bought a Jag biggrin
