Bit of help really is needed. My Dad passed away coming up for 5 years ago, and im looking to help my mum finally sort out the garage over the next month. Now my Dad was an self employed builder, and DIY mechanic could be often found tinkering with his vintage bikes, or doing mechanical fixes on his own cars.

As such over the years he collected various pieces of equipment and tools, some of which mum would like to get rid off.

For example:
2 x Trolly Jacks
4 x Axle Stands
3 x Socket sets
Multiple spanners, wrenchs, hammers, saws, other mechanic based equipment I have no idea what for.

Also we opened up cupboard and found boxes and boxes of screws, nails, rivets.

I will go through and keep some of it, but what could I do with the rest as I dont want to throw it away. Sell it on Ebay? Local Ad's?

Do people want old spanners etc?

Local car boot sale or auto jumble would be good places to start. How about a local school or college.

Put up a proper list here with pics if possible and whereabouts you are located.

If you are only looking to get rid and don't mind strange PHers turning up you will clear your garage in no time.

Garage Sale. Board up outside the house and let people come in and have a nosey and buy stuff.

E-bay is often a good bet for this sort of thing.

Maybe PH needs a "tools" section in its classifieds.

Im located in Crowthorne, Berkshire. I'll speak to Mum and see if she wants any money for them, and I will start to get some photo's in the next few weeks.

Dad always fixed everything himself to do with cars, or the house so always kept everything, tools, nuts, screws, washers just incase he needed it in the future. Problem was he knew where everything was, I dont.

I think some of the things like socket sets, trolly jacks we can sell but its the random collection of around 50 drill bits of various sizes that would need to be job lots etc.

I will get some lists together and go from there.

Ah. How do you get there then (I mean other than through that link)?

ETA: Ah it's in the parts section.

Get some photos on here, a lot of us would love to take some off your hands and would cover your postage if we're too far to pick them up! smile

I always think putting things on here is much better than a simple garage sale-type clearout because no end of people will take stuff and then sell it on, which isn't really the point.. whereas with PHers your know it's going to be used and used well!

I'd be interested in a trolley jack and the axle stands if you are geographically local..

eta: Berkshire, never mind

Thanks all. I will speak with my Mum and see what she wants to do about selling them or giving them away etc.

Im going to keep some of the tools for future use, but no need to have multiple's off etc.

Might be a few weeks before I get the time off to sort it, but will certainly put pics on here.

Cheers for the help.

Have a good look through it all and make a note of the brands and manufacturers of the tools.

I'll never forget the day I went round the local monthly car boot with my Dad back when I was 8 or 9. Being keen bargain hunters I always used to have to get up super early so we could get there as the gates opened to spot any bargains. Usually nothing came up but I always liked to go with birthday money to see what there was in the way of Scalextric for my collection.

This particular day we struck gold, a poor old dear and her son had a top box tool chest full of tools they wanted to shift that belonged to her late husband. Complete sets of spanners, sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers, anything you can think of, all either Snap On, Mac Tools, Britool or a few Halfords Professional bits. I think she wanted 25p each for the spanners, the lot would've added up to about £50 but my dad bunged her the whole £75 we'd come out with as he couldn't quite bring himself to rip her off that much.

So we staggered back to the car with boxes and bags of high quality tools, well over a grand's worth in new value and we've still got 99% of them in good working order today.

Keep them!

I've still got all of my Dads old tools, still use loads of them regularly.
This. Absolutely this. Unless you've already got enough tools, but IMHO that's impossible. You can never have too many tools.

As others have suggested, get pics and get them up here. I'm looking for a decent ranging set of ratchet spanners, for example, so if I'm working in the area I would drop in and buy. smile
