First they spoke about new 205 GTI, now they distance 208 from modern Clio 200 which is labeled as too focused for everyday use. Good bye Peugeot.

I think the point they are trying to make is the 208 is aimed at the people who want an everyday car with a sporting edge to it.The more track focused market is limited and pretty much owned by Renault so why waste money trying to compete when they can focus on making a good sporty user friendly hot hatch.
Just because they do not want to enter a niche market does not mean the car will not be succesful.You could in fact say it is a sound business decision,their are more people who want a sportyish hatch with aircon/satnav etc than a stripped out semi racer.
PSA are a bit misunderstood in this dept,I recall when the C4 VTS was launched with "only" 180bhp when most rivals were over 200 Citroen said thet it was a sporting version of the model but not aimed to compete with other hatches but just a version with a sporting edge to it.No harm in that,just means they are bought by people without egos as big as a house.

Yes and no. There's certainly no harm in having merely 'adequate performance', but I think you need to distance it from both the basic version of the car and the hot hatch variant. Ideally it would be entertaining to throw around and yet usefully more refined and/or cheaper to run than the hot version. I have to confess I haven't driven the C4 VTS, but I'm guessing if it handled like a 306 GTi-6/Xsara VTS - possibly slightly softer - and 'only' had 180 bhp people would have been fine with it.
They made cars with "Warm" performance in the past they were called xsi

When the 208 was first shown in the motoring press, they raved about it, "new 205" we were promised. Now we have the first road tests and its just average, again. After the 207 you'd think they'd learn their lesson. The autocar test this week had it 150 KG heavier than Peugeot said. This is pretty disgraceful. Yep Peugeot is dead as far as drivers cars are concerned. As I see our 22 year old 205 GTi getting more and more decrepid, I really cant see it ever being replaced by another Pug. Renaultsport rule the hot hatch world just now and I cant see it changing for a long time.

Lolz? Citroen has not been doing hot hatches since the AX GT,the Saxo was on 106 platform so mainly Peugeots work.
