As title suggests

Was there ever an american car that was similar to the mk1/2 escort?
i know everything bigger over there (huge generalisation) but i was wondering if anything of a similar size, layout etc etc was produced over there?

cheers

Pinto was a little smaller than a current Focus and was RWD. That's probably the closest Ford equivalent in engineering terms, although the space in the market would have been taken by the Maverick or for the "hot" versions, the Mustang.

Plymouth sold a version of the UK Avenger though and the Morris Marina was sold in small numbers over there as an Austin.

Chevette was GM's first world car, it was the Vauxhall Chevette over here and a bit of a rally weapon in HSR form.

The Ford Cortina (Mk. 1 and Mk. 2) were sold in the US, as was the Escort Mk. 3.
